Is it a 300 Win mag or 300 Short mag? If you are not planning on hunting anything larger than deer I would think this is to much gun. The problems I have found with the magnum cartridges are recoil and the price of ammo. I personally am not a fan of magnum rifle cartridges. I try to stick with the more common calibers 270, 308, 30-06. Some people are not affected by recoil. If you think you are not try this little test. Take a buddy to the range with you, fire a few rounds. Now keep looking forward and hand your buddy your rifle. Have him cycle the action (without you peeking) but not tell you if he chambered a round. You shoot the gun just like it was loaded. Try this a few times loaded and unloaded and I think you will be surprised. I know I was.

do you think the 308 is a good gun that could put down a elk. I still have hope that someday my number will get drawn.

The .308 is also one of our most popular big game cartridges, not only in the U.S. But in many other countries as well. For hunting deer size game at close to medium ranges, the .308 Winchester loaded to about 2800 fps with a 150 grain bullet is an excellent performer. The .308 is by no means one of our better elk cartridges, but when loaded with a good 180 grain bullet it will suffice. H380, H335, IMR-4895, RL-12, and W-748are excellent powders for the .308 Winchester.

I bought my 1st bolt gun in Remington model 700 .270 caliber in 1988. In 1995 I traded it for a used Browning A-bolt .300 win magnum. In 2001 I traded it for a new Browning BLR .308 win. Out of all 3 guns I liked the .300 win mag the least. i like the .270 way better and I like the .308 even better than the .270. The .300 kicked like a mule gone mad and had a long 26 inch barrel that is not good for tight in the tree stand maneuvering around. The BLR has a short 20 inch barrel that is perfect. I have killed a buck at a distance of 270 yards with this rifle.:)
