Dont take this the wrong way, but what did you do to gain access to the properties you just lost?

If you dont have a place to hunt, start knocking on doors, and offer up to help the farmer with some of his chores.

That is good advice. I don't hardly let anyone hunt on me anymore unless they are willing to come around other then just to hunt. Don't have to work for nothing but a hand now and then goes a long way. Had a couple of fellers I used to let hunt and that was the only time I seen them. A few hunters have made it hard on the good ones. I have had my gates left open and cows scattered all over. Some climb the fences and ride them down, and some leave trash/beer cans laying all around. One even shot 4 big holes though my silo with a what looks like a 12 gauge slug or maybe a 50 cal muzzle loader. Have also had a couple cows shot and one horse. Had a couple even sneak a bunch of their buddies in without asking. Just makes it hard for the good hunters to find places to hunt now days. I still allow 3 or 4 neighbors to hunt on me but I know they take care of my place and treat it with a little respect. Some do not.

If you didn't call them on the telephone or visit them, how did you find out you lost your hunting spot?

Sounds like the only time you checked in with them (if at all) was either right before the season or possibly by bumping into them while hunting their land during the season. If that's the case, it might be a good reminder in the future to remember that the land somebody gives you permission to hunt isn't free, and you build no lasting bonds by constantly taking without at least offering to give back.

Little things like sending flowers to the funeral when a landowner or their family member dies is just one way you could have demonstrated your appreciation and thanks. These types of things go a long way towards establishing long lasting relationships. As a landowner myself, I wouldn't have any problem cutting off a guy that only showed up when he was going to get something out of it (i.e. a hunt).

If I were you, I'd look for some nearby public ground. Since it's public and you're one of the landowners, you'd never have to do anything more than show up. Also, look into putting in for the Fort Knox hunt. There's a ton of great deer down there. Good luck.

Where did you hunt last year? It doesn't seem like you brought anything to the relationship which is fine with some landowners but not with most. I have in the past bailed and put up hay, cut and brought in tobacco, helped pick beans, corn, tomatoes, dug potatoes, you get the idea. Its usually a mutual relationship where both parties bring something to the table even if it is a little time and sweat.

Now is a good time to be out there knocking on doors. Most farmers are covered up with gardens right now and could always use a few helping hands.

I hunted on this old man when i was in my earley 20's. He knew my grandad so he let me hunt. I started helping him with everything on the farm. One day we were out in the garden doing something (don't remember) Well the old guy tripped and fell.. I tried to catch him but failed, He looked up at me and screamed YOU SON OF A _____ YOU PUSH ME!!! I laughed so hard i fell!! Great old guy-he's gone now.....He had a great place on the back side of the airport 1000's of acres!
