About what time do the antlers stop growing? I'm guessing the middle of August???

I would say you are right on it.

I think it is a little different for each buck, just like it is a little different for each doe that comes into estrus.
I think the end of July is when most bucks stop growing and start hardening. Of course, I have pics in the trailcam section where
I have a buck named Hollywood who is a long way from being finished and another that I call the Big 7 who is nearly finished growing.
When length stops accumulating, I think mass/hardening sets in and continues until the bone gets too big for the covering (velvet) and starts to split the velvet sort of like a cicada shedding its outer skin for a new one....just my take.
