View Full Version : Need advice on late summer foodplot.
Surrounding a 30 acre "santuary" on my farm, I have about 3-4 acres that I have limed, plowed, fertilized, disked & have ready to plant a late summer food plot. I plan to broadcast the seed & then drag the plot with an old set of bed springs, to cover the seed. These plots are somewhat shady at the margins & run in a North-South direction.
There are tons of soybean & corn fields only 50 - 100 yards from these plots (but not on my land) so I would like to plant somthing beside soybeans. I want to get the deer used to hanging around the margin of the santuary & plan to plant colver, oats, turnips, lablab, chicory, etc on these plots in the fall.
Does anyone have any recommendation as to what I could plant in these plots that would b productive until Fall?
Thanks,
Rob
Thats a tough one this late, my top soil is getting dry and everything is starting to show stress from the heat and lack of rain.

i agree. i think i would just wait and put something out later for the fall. this weather is in summer mode now. it would be tough to get anything going now.
good luck though with whatever you decide.
We only have a couple of months before its time to put in the fall plots. I havnt checked the price of feed corn lately but you could broadcast a couple hundred lbs of feed corn evenly over the entire plot, but not cover it up. Do that now and again in a month and I bet that would bring them out that in that direction.
I havnt bought any corn for my cams yet, Im waiting for the apples to start dropping in a couple of my neighbors orchards. I should be able to fill up as many corn sack fulls of apples, that hit the ground as my back can handle this yr.
Do you have any neighbors with apple trees? They would appreciate somebody picking them up, it will help keep the hornets out of their yard.

I have 6 apples trees in my yard. This weekend I bought two trail cams. Would apples be good to put out and set up a trail cam over them? I also have a couple of pear trees will the deer eat them? A big pile of apples with some pears thrown in would get my belly going????
