I got my 7.7 from Sportsmans Guide.
Everyone else wanted $50.00 for 20 shells.
I bought 20 for $35.00

Are you talking about the 6.5 Arisaka?
Old Western Scrounger carries it new.

Are you sure its not a 6.5mm Arisaka? I didn't think the Japs had anything other than the 6.5mm Arisaka and the 7.7mm Arisaka... Unless it has been re-barreled or something after your granddad brought it back.
Some of the milsurp gun forums on the net could probably help you identify what model of Jap rifle it is, and the right caliber of ammo for it.
Edited to add that if all else fails a gunsmith could probably figure out what ammo it needs in just a few minutes, or if you want to be extra safe, make a casting of the chamber and inspect the rifle for safety issues.

I took the rifle to whittakers guns, and we tried a 6.5 jap in.He jammed one in and did,nt even get the bolt closed .Matter a fact the bullet got wedged.Pulled the caseing out bullet pulled from the caseing and hung in the breach.we got it out.He said this was 6mm jap very early model he said. The rifle has a quick mount scope fixture on the side. Not sure what caliber it is .Bad thing is the riseing sun emblem is scratched across it .

Since it chokes on a 6.5mm shell, I guess if I was in your shoes I'd be looking for a smith to do a chamber casting.

That's not the rising sun; it's a chrysanthemum. If it's been ground off, it was confiscated in-country by the occupying US troops in 1945 and brought over here for sale. The ones with the chrysanthemum intact were very likely battlefied trophies brought back by some GI.
Some of the later productions were made by a very stressed Japanese government and quality can range from OK to downright dangerous to shoot. Some American prisoners were also forced to work in the factories and they sabotaged what they could. The Japs were running out of steel and sometimes they just melted down what they had available. I'd let a gunsmith give it a real good going over. If it's in good shape, get it out and shoot it. The Arisaka is a near copy of the famous Mauser 98 design so the basis is there for a decent gun.
