I know its out of season but I just got my choke and thought I would give it a whril. I got a gobblin thunder .665 for my SBE I. I shot Winchester Supreme 3.5", #5 shot, 2 1/4oz. 40yds had 22 pellets in the head and neck, 30 was nasty, and at 15 I'd better be on him. I shot it at 50 and only had 7 in the head and neck with the pattern being pretty even. Not sure if I would shoot at one that far are not. Before next spring I might try Nitro's H521 load (4x5x7 hevi shot) thats whats recommended for my gun, the extended range #5's, or the hevi 13 in #5's. I have only had to take 2 shots at 50 or so yards in my life and killed them both, but 40yds. should be automatic if there is no operator error.:D Maybe with those high dollar loads I could extend it to 50-55yds. further than that and I probably shouldn't be shoot'in.

I bought my first extended turkey choke this year, and put my tom down at 45 yards with no flopping around at all. I bought the undertaker and it seems to work very well. I just shoot the remington 3" #5's.

I'm sure my gun would kill one at 50 only because I have done it. The pattern was just alittle spread out and there might be room for a turkey head to find a hole. Sounds like your gun is doing very good even with the 3". I just shoot 3.5" shells because I can, if I could go back and do it all over again I still say I would have kept my first turkey gun mossberg 500 camo. But since my SBE is payed for I guess I'll keep shootin it until I can had it down.

My gun is an old remington 870 that only shoots 3", but I have killed a lot of turkeys with it. I have never shot a bird at 50 yards, but my gun does the same as yours does it sounds like. I get a pretty good pattern at 40 yards, but it really spreads out at 50+. You should have seen my gun before I put the camo tape on it, it was all scratched up from years of running through briers chasing turkeys and cypress branches chasing ducks:D. I have had that gun since I was a pre-teen:)

I went back to the farm today and tried the more expensive shells a buddy gave me a couple winchester extended range #5's 2oz., and a couple of hevi 13 in #5 2 1/4oz. both 3.5" mags. Both were alot better at 40 than regular winchester supremes, and 50 would be dead bird (if I didn't mess up) both were over 17 pellets at 50 but it was getting dark and I didn't count every hole, I'll be back out there this weekend and I'll tally up in the daylight(I left targets in barn). Both were close hevi 13 maybe thicker pattern but extended has more velocity. I will probably go with which everone is available for the cheapest price.

Sounds like you have found your shooting "groove", it makes you more confident doesn't it?

You going to hunt fall turkeys this year?

Oh yeah! Hope to get 1 or 2 with my bow, and might even take it during the shotgun season. It all depends on how the birds act, here lately they have been all over my lab-lab plot????Not sure why but if they show up in range opening morning I'll do my best to let the air out of one.

Sounds like your gun is pattering well, I shoot an .870 Rem and I to bought an undertaker choke this year and was very satisfied killed a bird at 42 steps this pass season. I shoot winchester sep. 3in mags. Heard some say the undertaker choke wasn't all that great but in my opinion it's fine for me.

I have know of several 3" shooters that really like that choke.

I killed a 2 year old tom at 49 yards with my Beretta 390 with a Mad Max .660 choke tube sitting on the edge of a pasture. I thought it was 40 yards before the shot and stepped it off after.

Thats the main reason for me wanting a gun/choke/load that will kill at 50-55yds. just incase I misjudge a distance. I pack a rangefinder, but sometimes theres no time to range.

If you really want to see what the SBE will do then invest in the set up appropriate for you model and know that the gun is being all it can be.....

http://www.nitrocompany.com/pattern.htm

You can get these thru Uncle Lee's or Wing Supply!!!!!!

I use em in my Berretta Extrema and I would not hesitate an open shot at 65 yards........

Before anyone makes a comment about that being to far, you dont know what you are talking about.......My gun consistantly buts 15-20 pieces of hevi shot in the brain and spine of a target at that distance.......Thats better than most 3 inch 12's at 40 yards......

I don't think I have EVER had time to range a shot before the shot.

I know the feeling, I try to range trees, rocks or whatever landmarks are around me when I setup, but if it happens fast I forget.

My choices on ranging...........If hes close just under his chin.....If he aint then the base of his neck.....

I got enough crap in my vest to worry about range finders..........

Yeah I quit packing a million calls a long time ago. I pack 1 slate, 1 box, 2 mouth calls, range finder, 3 extra shells, and a bottle-o-water. My vest organizes it well and I have plenty of room for more just don't see much need.

I noticed the bottle of water. I always carry 1 or 2 depending how long I plan to stay in the field.

Yeah, I always carry TP with me. As soon as I'm dressed the TP goes in my pocket. I've made the mistake of not carrying in my early years and came out of the woods one time minus a glove and the next minus a sock.
