recently looked at an sks the metal mechanics of it are in very nice shape, comes with the grenade launcher tip on the barrel, bayonett, and grenade sights. you can tell the origional stock is on it because its beat up pretty bad. looked in cabelas and theres alot of room to work with as far as upgrading. the guy wants a hundred bucks for it. is this a good deal, and what kind of game is this capable of taking from what a friend tells me it would make a good varment rifle. thanks for all your help i appreciate it

you probably are looking at a SKS 59/66. They shoot the 7.62x39mm, the same cartridge as the AK47, very similar to the 30-30 and a perfect deer rifle for the kentucky woods. Depending on the history of the rifle (Russian, Yugo, Chinese craftsmanship) it is well worth the $100 and then some. They are commonly seen in the condition you describe in the $170+ range.

If it has the grenade sights and launcher, it's a Yugoslavian SKS. KM is right, they're currently selling in the $200 range from dealers. If the bore is clean and everything is intact, I'd buy it for a hundred bucks. Good dependable rifles and fun to shoot.

It shoots 7.62x39mm ammo. Ammo is available for much cheaper than your usual hunting calibers if you get the Russian or other foreign milsurp stuff. Winchester and Remington make it and you can get it at Walmart but it's expensive and they have a reputation for having soft primers. The commie stuff is sometimes corrosive. Not a problem if you clean it well after firing it.

You can hunt deer with it in Kentucky. I wouldn't... just because I have better calibers to use. If it's all I had though, I'd do it. Make sure you use soft point or hollow points and you don't have an aftermarket magazine that holds more than ten rounds. Great coyote caliber if you aren't looking to keep the fur.

If you're unfamiliar with the SKS, there are some online sources you'll want to see. Go to http://www.surplusrifle.com/ and click on the SKS. Read up on slam fires so you'll appreciate the importance of keeping the bolt and firing pin clean. ;)

If you dont buy this email me with info on seller and I will. Haven't seen an sks in $100 in a couple years. This rifle is more than likely a Yugo.

I used to have a Yugo SKS and it was one of the best rifles I ever owned, especially after I modified it. If you want to hunt with it, a scope is recommended. There are a lot of aftermarket parts available for the SKS, including a receiver cover with a scope mount built into it. I'd also look at the stocks available from ATI. They have a Monte Carlo style available for that classic rifle look. The other good choice is the Fiberforce thumbhole stock. I used to have that particular stock on my SKS and it impressed the hell out of me. But all of this is my opinion though. I also agree with other people on here saying high-cap mags are not necessary. As far as ammo goes, Brown Bear soft point would be your best bet for hunting purposes.

I've got a chinese made sks I bought in 1988. this gun is one of the most fun rifles to shoot. I only paid $99 for mine back then and would'nt sell it for 3 times that.:)
