Ky is still one of the lowest MW states out there..Several of the resturants around here that pay MW just lowered their operating hours and cut back employee hours to make up the difference. .True story...I was working at LJS while I was in college. Working 40 hours a week just barely covered my bills and I mean just barely. I was making just above MW and I was crew leader:rolleyes: Anyway we hired a girl I went to college with. Smart, hard worker..Took right off. Two week into the job she came to me and gave her two weeks notice. I asked her if anything was wrong..That I would try to make it right(I wanted to keep her around, she seemed like a great employee)...She said no, its just that working is costing me too much money  I asked hows that..she said well I have two kids and I get financial assiatance, food stamps, housing assitance on rent and utilities and they pay for a baby setter. Oh and I get money for lunch thru the CAP office  She said that when she turned in her work earnings for these programs it actually cost her more money in benifits than she was making working for MW..Oh well, tru story and i remember it like it was yesterday. Employers in East, Ky are so use to the lack of jobs that are use to paying peanuts because peoplpe need the jobs. They know that most people will do the job at MW because there is nothing else to go too. The average mediun household income for a working family in East,Ky is pathetic compared to the rest of Ky.The politicians in East,Ky have been so busy lining their own pockets they have forgotten the working man. Theres been little to no industry brought in..New jobs are far to rare.

welcome to the club! I was told that when min wage hit $7.50 I still wouldn't be getting a raise. I told them to keep that promotion and department head crap unless my pay went up along with min. wage.

That's the law.
The ONLY thing covered in MW law is the MW. Until the time when MW catches up to you and you make MW then and only then will the law require your pay to go up.
Too many people time and again think their pay will go up when the "new" MW law passes but if they make over MW then they are not covered.

The girl's story is sad but all too true. With all the food stamps, WIC, HUD, etc. they make more than working people. It's socialism and it's not good. It kills individual incentive and integrity and basically makes them like indians on the eastern Kentucky reservation.
Dosent the rugged terrain of E Ky prevent business from moving there?
I cant see plants setting up there and then trying to truck their products out like they do in flat land.
It seems difference the between E Ky and other rual mountian areas like NC and Tn is tourisum dollars.
Do most of your kids have to leave to find work after High School?

Isn't it funny how a person making more than MW thinks they are getting screwed when MW goes up but there pay doesn't? I think that is hilarious. I also think that is why MW doesn't work. MW goes up, everyone else thinks they are ENTITLED to a raise, they demand it, they finally get it, then the cost of EVERYTHING goes up as the expense is passed on to the consumer, then the consumer can't get ahead because they only make MW, so we should raise MW again right?
nasty circle that doesn't work, IMO

Gee, you mean raising minimum wage doesn't help?
Who'da thunk it? I mean, if you make a company pay it's employees more, then they're gonna be good little soldiers, and just eat the added costs, right?
Or, and follow me here, because it gets complicated....they pass on the added costs to the consumer. So, now you've got someone making (for instance) $7/hr. Well, I'm glad he got a raise, but all the places he buys stuff from are gonna RAISE their prices, to cover the add cost of an increased minimum wage. So, the guy isn't any better off.
And, what's worse, is what's already been noted above. Those of use who are in the $10-20/hr range won't get a raise, and products will STILL cost us more. So, we get screwed, the minimum wage earner gets screwed, but the liberals get votes....
Good times.
Oh, and for anyone who believes a business will NOT pass on added costs to their consumers...please come see me, I'd like to talk to you about this bridge I've got for sale.

I operate a business in Prestonsburg, I pay entry level workers $9/ hour plenty of applications till they see the little sticker in the corner that says "drug screen required". IMO, its cheaper in the long run to hire a quality employee and pay him well and treat him good versus paying a lower wage and constant turnover.
Several years ago a company that handled computer tech calls for microsoft came here starting pay was 9 something an hour, when I moved to Georgia the same company had the same thing down there but starting pay was 11 an hour. Employers here know that they can get away with paying us less for menial jobs.

Yeah, I work a second job where I have seen the prices increase in lieu of the MW increase.

I worked at the Prison up near you starting out. Long time ago. At the time they were paying $6+ an hour(yea for prison work) any way the same company was paying $3-$5 more an hour in several border states. Its pretty much a joke as prisons go, I went to state just as fast as possible then to Federal a few years after that. Same jobs gargatuan differences in pay. Espically if you hire in something other than custody. $9 an hour is pretty good starting pay for P-Burg by the way;)
