Just had to rub it in a little...I just got back from lunch at my grandparents, and mamaw fixed grouse & dumplings, mashed potatoes, green beans, sweet potatoes, cole slaw, cornbread & apple cobbler for papaw's (88th) birthday dinner.

I made good use of my holiday on Monday, and went grouse hunting. I managed to get 9 flushes with six of the birds holding for 5 separate points, and put 2 in the gamebag. On my way back home, I stopped off at my grandparents house and dressed the two birds for them, and mamaw decided to fix them for papaw's birthday. As always, mamaw's cooking was excellent and I ate way too much, and papaw and I got to relive a few memories of when he was teaching me how to hunt and of some of our dogs from years past.

Sorry you guys had to miss the meal, but I know you'd want to hear all about it.[;)][:D]

Happy Birthday to your G-pa. Glad to hear y'all had a great day.

I was planning on hunting Manday and truck broke down on the way. Hope to make it out this weekend, my last chance. Next weekend we are taking about 40 kids quail hunting.

We hunted great cover Tuesday, but only flew 3 birds, didn't get a shot. The lacation we hoped to hunt was taken. As we were congregating after the hunt, we met the gentlemen that were hunting our honey hole. They had two birds, and had flew several. Nice guys if they hadn't been hunting our location.[:D] Maybe next time.[;)]

Well I guess I'll grouse hunt some next week....since nothing else is in season. Are they still easy to kill?

Thanks guys,

Yeah he's quite a guy, and she's definately quite a cook.

Here's an interesting story of current events...Papaw is very excited with anticipation, because I'm proud to say that my home county (Carter) is doing something pretty remarkable. A local organization has been formed to raise money for the purpose of sending all of the remaining Carter County veterans of WWII to Washington, DC in May for the dedication of the WWII Memorial, and as a surviving member of the D-Day forces that ultimately liberated Europe, my grandfather, Marcus Suttles, will be in attendance, along with (I believe[?]) 35 other veterans and their guests.

Apparently, Carter County is the only community in the Country to successfully undertake this challenge, and the veterans will be welcomed by our Congressional delegation, there is to be national news coverage of their tour of the Memorial, and there will be a special ceremony where they will place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Seems we've been hearing mostly bad news lately, and this kind of thing helps offset some of the negative stuff.

Grouseguy,
The folks of Carter co. should be commended. Recognizing the WW2 vets this way is awsome. My grandfather was a WW2 vet also, he was captured and held as a POW, he later escaped. I wish he could be there, but we lost him last year. I know you and your grandgather will be proud when the day arrives.

Mark, I went back and read your post that ril mentioned. That really is a great thing you folks are doing up there. You are right, it is good to hear some "good news". I really hope it makes the news and is treated with the due respect it deserves.

Thanks guys, I'm very proud of this community for this effort, and the organizers deserve a lot of credit for putting together a 1st class trip. I believe its set up as 4 days and 3 nights at absolutely no cost to the vets.

GG, that's what I love about Carter Co, people helping people. I think the whole thing is great, my father-in-law was in WWII and I know the effects it had on him were harsh but he was a proud man all the way to his grave.
I hope to see your grandpa on tv and they are deserving of the trip.

My Dad was a gunner on a pair of 20mm anti-aircraft guns on a tanker in the Pacific during WW II. He passed away 10 years ago. We can't do enough for our Vets. Glad Carter County is doing it so well.
