Has anyone ever used Egyptian wheat for a food plot?? If so how did the deer like it? Neighbor is planting it this year. From what I can find out it grows up to 10 feet tall & it is a type of sourgum.
Would like to know what anyone thinks of it.

Aw come on guts . I cannot beleive no one out there has not heard about Egyptian wheat. Just want to know if the deer like it. My neighbor has it planted & man it looks like corn today when I looked at it. What I did find out about it here on the internet is that it does have a BIG head of seed on it , But if it gets to 10 feet tall how do the deer get to it?

Here is some things I found when I googled it. Seems to be best suited for quail or dove.

If you need cover, it's good for deer. Not much for food value.

Mostly put out for quail, I used it last year as a temporary road screen/quail plot, and around my dove field for hunters to hide in. As you mentioned, it gets reaally tall (especially if you throw some N to it), and produces a lot of seed. Unfortunately for your purposes, I don't think the deer will feed on it much.

I have seen it used only as a sight barrier. If your neighbor is planting it..........Take that as a hint!!! lol:rolleyes:

Great screen and quail plot. Plant in rows and make sure the plot is 15 feet wide if you really want quail to get the best use of it. Deer may munch on it

Heres where I get my EW seed and what they say about it.

Egyptian Wheat - . A member of the Sorghum family. Used extensively for birds. Well adapted to the Southeast. Bears large seed heads with abundant feed.Excellent for quail. Planting Date - In spring after danger of frost and throughout the summer months. Planting Rate - 10 pounds per acre or 1/2 pound per 1000 square feet in game plots. Planting Depth - Seed should be covered but not over 1 1/2" deep. Maturity - Seed will mature for game approximately 110 days after emergence

I think I'll take it as a hint, cause it is along the road. I kind of like the idea though as where he has it it will block the deer from my place to his, & it starts where the deer crosses the road into my place. Course he just bought the place & doesn't know that yet.

yeah, it's used to deter poaching when planted along a road. Grows fast and tall!

Miscanthus might work too as it will come back year after year...but wont provide the same benefit to quail.
