Internet car dealers SUCK A LOT !
Why can't I get a quoted price?
I started browsing for a Ford to replace my aging Ranger truck. I got online, went to Edmunds.com to compare things.
"Would you like an internet quote"?
I thought "What the heck, I'll try it".
Now I'm getting a bazzillion Emails asking if "I got the response I was looking for"? I got 14 Emails that tell me to "come in for a price quote". 14 Emails that tell me to "Call me for a price quote"
If I wanted to play mind games with a car salesman, I would walk in the front door. So far, they're all bait and switch liars. I hope there is a special place in hell for car salesman.
If you are a car salesman and this has offended you... GOOD !!!

Chad, if you're looking for another ranger or a ford product, look at www.offleaseonly.com Talk to Kevin. I had a great experience buying a car for my wife from these guys. Great deal, no bravo sierra, no hassle, price quoted was price paid.
All that price quote stuff is is a fishing line for your info. Very few, if any, car dealerships will talk turkey over the phone or internet. They can't use their techniques on you that way, they want you there in the flesh so they can...well, you know.
Nobody hates a car salesman more that I do (no offense) but I think I'd have an even harder time trusting one over the internet, ESPECIALLY if it was a used vehicle.
Good luck.

I have had good luck with Byerly Ford in Louisville.
When I was looking for my current car I used Cars.com to narrow the search. Then I would go to the dealers website and find that the car was even cheaper yet. Then do a little haggling. :)

I go to car forums are talk to other people about the price they are giving for their vehicles. That way you can get a good idea what you can get one for. I did this with my wifes Honda Accord this year and it helped alot. Many dealers told me the sticker was already a good price but after I pushed them and used one dealer against the other then I got the price way down. If one dealer doesnt want to work with me then I kicked them aside. Stay in charge. If they want to sell a car they will bend. They have to make a profit but don't let them rob you blind. Also get the "out the door price" not some monthly payment amount. Always just work on the car price your dealing on and tell them you don't have a trade in or they will rip you a new one on your trade in.

"You first problem is you are buying a ford"
Oh, I dunno. 189,00 trouble free miles. Besides, *REAL* men drive Ford trucks...:D
Although I do admit to lusting after those Toyota trucks. I just can't bring myself to do it. I have no loyalty to any car company anymore. Since they don't have any loyalty to us...

If you want to buy one off the internet, why not just go to eBay? No BS there, lots of times the "buy it now" is way more than reasonable comparably.

I run a Chevy-Buick-Pontiac-Chrysler-Jeep and Dodge store and we handle each internet inquiry different. We handle it based in the customers request. Our lot price is asking price and our internet price is auction price. We take the haggle out of it if you find it on our website. That being said you have your quote when you go to our site. The price is CLEARLY marked on the site no need to ask for a quote. So if you want to check it out you can go to www.frankshoop.com (http://www.frankshoop.com) all prices are there and plenty of pics. Franks moto is "why would I advertise my second best price" if we are going to spend the money to advertise then lets beat everybody prices. So we sell volume. We don't want to make all of our money on one person...instead we will make a little on everybody. That make everybody get a good deal. Hope this makes sense and makes us a little bit respectable.

We bought the wifes car and found it on0line in tennessee. They were asking like 10,500 for it or something. when we asked about that particular vehicle, they said they could not find it. they found it on the trailer, loaded to go to another auction. It is a 5 speed and they said they don't move as fast. I offered them 9 for it and they said 9,500 and they would unload the trailer and get it back in the lot. I told them, you take it to the sale, if it doesnt bring 9, you bring it back. I will give you that for it. went to sale, brought it back, we went and got it. smooth as that.

Two different prices on the same vehicle? Let me understand this, I can get a better deal off of the internet than a face to face transaction? That just seems odd to me. :(

I just went and purchased a Kia Spectra LX for my wife. She had been driving a 04 Dodge Durango everyday and gas was breaking me for sure. I had a great time dealing with the salesmen as it wasnt my first rodeo. They did try every trick in the book. As said before if you are looking for new research the net before you go. Find out what folks are paying for the car you are looking for. Stand firm on your out the door total price and DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR TRADE IN OR DOWN PAYMENT until you are really sure you have a deal worked out as they love to keep you hostage. If you can come up with a really good down payment instead of a trade in with balance owed it gives you alot more buying power.

I would think that they have to be able to negotiate the price a little face to face...I show up at the lot with the internet price and haggle:p

That is where we are different... that price is the bottom line... but when you go home you won't find a better price unless the like vehicle has more miles or ben wrecked or a private owner.

I walk in, lay my offer on the table, and walk if they even start with me. I look at it like this, the car salesman that gets his hooks into me gets one shot at landing me......If you really want to see a salesman squirm, start talking to him about dealer holdback money above and beyond any incentives the manufacturer offers, and any additional rebates that are offered. Buying a vehicle at "cost" is a pretty good deal, but there is more available if you dig hard enough. I refuse to pay destination and dealer prep. If they try to tack that on, I walk. I have never been in a situation where I had to get rid of what I had and get something new.
Make sure you know what your trade-in is worth. Many times you think you are getting the deal you want based on the money you agree to pay for their vehicle, but are they paying you what yours is worth? I make them write down real numbers, not move theirs and mine on a scale....we will give you more for your trade, but we wont come off of ours as much. They try to move money around to make it appear you are getting a deal....I am willing to split the difference between trade-in and retail. They will sell my trade-in at retail, so why should I take less for my vehicle that I am trading in? They make money twice, once on the new car you buy, and once when they sell the vehicle you trade in.

As managers we fight this battle every week in the meetings to decide how to sell more vehicle and to be fair. In todays market with gas prices the way they are and selling vehicles getting tougher and tougher you have to find a way to generate traffic. If we asked nada retail online would you call us? If we ask auction price on the lot and online we would never make any money. The downfall is when we price our vehicles at auction price we have to show auction price for trade-ins and then everybody gets mad an thinks we are tring to steal their trade. We cannot give retail for a customers trade and sell ours trade value. Hers my question for you guys because you all work for a living right? Do you go to work for free? You goal is to make money right? Then whats wrong with car dealers wanting to make money? Everyone that buys a new car knows our cost and wants us to sell below that. Now used cars are the same way... we sell from cost. I wish I could negociate the price of my groceries, corn for the feeder, and gas for my car:eek:!!!! I do understand car guys have a bad reputation... and some are horrible... but they too are just doing their job and tring to earn a livin!!! I hope noone thinks I am being a smart A@# with the questions but I have always wondered how people outside the car business would answer those questions!

Dont take my post the wrong way, you seem to be on the up and up....I just didnt understand the reason for two prices. I also agree that dealerships are in business to make money, just like every other business. My problem with them is the get you to the table, and start with the song and dance. I have no time for games. When I make my offer, which includes what I expect for my trade-in, and the salesman says, "Lemme run it by my boss" and starts running back and forth to him, why do I not just go to the salesmans boss to make my deal. I am fair, and expect to be treated fair. I have bought enough vehicles to know if the salesman in sincere, and is willing to help.
Chancey, you may be the only honest car salesman I have ever had any dealings with:cool: I have no problem with you or anyone else making a living, I just dont want to fund 6 months of a car salesmans life:D

I agree with this... Actually all of your reply. THe main reason for the back and forth is to make people fell like they won... if you immediatly take their offer they feel like they got ripped off. Think about this... you come in and ask me a price on the lot and I say $22000.oo and you say Ill do 21000.00 on the road and I go OK Lets right it up... would you feel that you got a good deal? Now the reason for the lot asking price is their are people that will pay what you ask. THose are the people that make it possible to loose money on other deals or step up in a trade in to earn another customer. I actually sit behind the desk and work the deals for the salesmen so I know what you are talking about on the back and forth.

When my wife was pregnant with our first child, she got the urge to buy a van. We went to the local Ford dealer here. My wife explained what she wanted, and what she wanted to pay. The salesman, instead of talking further with her, simply said "Lady, you don't get something for nothing here, if you don't like the price of our vans, maybe you should buy an Escort Station Wagon, thats probably all you can afford." Of all the wrong things to say, in jest or not, to a 8+ month pregnant hormone raging woman, that was the wrong one. We left before she killed him, and bought a nicer van for less money at another dealer.

I am glad... like I said some salesman/dealerships are just that way. I think there are good dealerships and bad ones just like in any business. I know I hate best buy cause the way I am treated in there. I shop at HH Gregg so I undestand how you all feel. I hope that if any of you ever have to shop with us that it is as enjoyable of an experience as you can have shopping for a car :). If you all that are in western ky need any advice to help get a better deal just let me know...

Great post Chancey. I too sold cars for a Houston, TX Pontiac dealership for a while and have been treated with disrespect on a few occasions. Maybe if the dealers were like Walmart and the price marked was the price period without negotiations, car dealers wouldn't get such a bad rap.
On the other hand, I've known some used car dealers that used to run a note lot in Murray and I watched a father/son team up on their SIL/aunt, make $5000 off the car she bought and she gave them her trade in. They bragged, laughed and high-fived the rest of the day. That kinda stuff gives car dealers a bad name.

Everyone thinks dealers get rich off every car they sell but that is not the case at all... Examples: jeep wrangler MSRP $23340 Invoice $22239 with 456 holdback or caliber $17310 invoice $16515 hold back $506 If we held sticker on a caliber that is a whole $1301.00 profit. We have to pay a salesman $185 and 480 per vehicle sold in advetising. Not counting managers, electric, phones, ect. $1301-185-480= $630 With our invoice price online we NEVER sell a new car for sticker. Our big markup is in new trucks and right now they are not selling and by big mark up I mean 2300-3400. So there is a common misconception of major markups...
