Anyone ever go to Bernheim Forest? I'll admit I haven't been in a long time but do remember going and having a great time as a kid. Fast forward twenty years, we took the kids there today to picnic and see the animals and nature museum---- boy was I surprised. Seems several of the mounts were leaking a white substance(I was told arsenic or fomaldehyde) either way they were all done away with. No arrowheads, no snakes, in fact the old building where the nature center was located is now devoted to art, which was mostly closeups taken with a high resolution camera, and crafty type things made from sticks and wood as well as a few sculptures. Seems the current director wanted to focus on art. The animals I did count were 2 deer in a pen, 2 buzzards and an owl. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you want to take your kids to see native Ky. wildlife(other than in the woods) head to Salato, because you'll be highly disappointed if you go to Bernheim thinking it will be anything like it was in the 80's:mad:..............

That was the overwhelming feeling I got as well. I can't help but wonder if a lot of the mounts were really not in the "vision" of the new director instead of actually being somthing wrong with them. I do like art, don't get me wrong, but if I want to see art we'll go to a museum. The whole theme of the place seems to have changed from nature to yuppies wondering around in the woods...........

LMAO. . . .Instead of bitching about the yuppies taking over Bernheim and ruining it, why don't you two get off yer arses, volunteer (like those darned Louisville hippie types are apparently doing), and restore it to its past glory?

Sheeez, listening to people gripe about somebody else's volunteer work is like hearing the natives over in Africa bitching about the Peace Corps not throwing in a fridge when they built the houses.

If you have such a problem with what I say, why did you reply? :)

To answer your question though, I replied, b/c I happen to know several people that volunteer a good bit of their own free time trying to make Bernheim Forest an enjoyable and well-preserved public place. It bothers me when people expect others to do something that they're not willing to do themselves. If they don't like what's going down at Bernheim, then by golly, they can just volunteer and do what needs to be done to make it top-notch in their own books.

Did you read my first post? Did I mention anything about a volunteer? I said( as I was told by two different employees) that this was the direction the current director was taking. If you will also REREAD my first post, I said I had not been there in twenty years. You know if you go to a nature center, you kind of expect to see nature, not paintings, molded pots, and sculptures. If you go to a Riverbats game, after a long hiatus of not attending and expect to see baseball but once you sit down realize they're having a dog show, would you not be disappointed?

I am one of those who volunteer out there and have been going out there since the 70's. Bernheim is much more visitor friendly now that it was in the old days. Hell most of the place was locked up in the 70's and 80's. Now there are tons of trails over the 14,000ac., activities and many
other learning opportunities and programs. I did not hear you say anything about all the additions you saw since 20 years ago. The caged animals have been a source of problems and there still are a lot of mounts in the education center but most of those were donated in a collection years ago and are coming apart. Bernheim is a gem and unlike 99% of the standard nature centers out there. Become a member and you will learn. If you have a problem fill out a comment card.

As a kid I always did enjoy going to the old nature center and seeing the copperhead and turtles. I do know where some huge bullfrogs are now but aint saying. There are improved paths for those who like the woods and there is a good path all the way around lake nevin now. The other lake near the nature center is where all the monster bluegill are, but you can;t fish it.

I have caught some 10" bass in Nevin, but not too many. There are some small gills in Nevin and some edible size too that folks take out every spring to eat.

I have found that the modern art trend confuses me a bit. Being an engineer, I just see things in black and white.

Does Otter Creek Park still have something to walk thru. Used to be some blind hole things you'd stick your hand in as a kid and try to guess what it was, like an antler, or turtle shell, a log, etc. or was that bernheim?

Bernheim forest, not known for it's "nature center" , but for the trees it harbors, there are specimens in the arboretum that are world class, and to put it in terms that hunters here would appreciate like laying your eyes on a 200" buck , I've been in the buisness since I could crawl and and have been to several Ky nurseryman's meetings at the forest, buddy hubbec put a lot of hard work into that place , just letting you guys know there is much more to that place than the museum or inside stuff that really doesn't have much to do with the "big picture" of why bernheim left money to preserve the forest in the first place.
