I'm considering putting a scope on a Marlin 30/30, not sure of model #, ejects on the side. My daughter really likes shooting it and handles it just fine, accurate to about 50 yards with iron sights, and got a nice doe last year. I was going to get her a .243 if she wanted to continue to hunt (she does) but again she shoots this thing really well, and i'd like her to get out to 100 yards or so.

Any advise or points to consider would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

ps...McDenney, don't hijack my thread with elk comments. Lol.

I love a scoped Marlin 336. I felt like it was the perfect deer getter and used it well until my brother took it back.

A good one piece Redfield or Leupold mount flat on the receiver, and a good low power compact scope is just what that rifle needs. I used a Leupold 1.5x5 and it was short and handy and at 1.5 it was better than iron sights at close ranges.

The 30-30 is great for deer and the lever action is great for the deer woods. Adding a scope gives it more reach and makes anybody more accurate.

Get your daughter set up with a good quality low power scope on this rifle and you'll like it so well you'll take it back away from her.

With the Hornady Ammo and a good scope you can get out to 175-200 yards. I was getting basball size groups at 150 yards with my marlin 336 and a low profile wide view 3x9x40 scope and that new Hornady ammo last season. It really drops the game also.

I like mine with open sights so well I took my scope back off of it. My son 11 yrs old shoots it better with open sights he was having a hard time holding it and finding his target through the scope but i think that was due to where the scope sit on the breach.

I have a 2-7X Redfield widefield low-profile scope on mine. I especially like the wide field of view for woods hunting as it lets me find the target faster. The variable lets me dial it up for longr shots.

It is probably a model 336 or 39. It should be marked but I believe any mount for a marlin levergun will work as most have flat tops and side ejection.

I have the model 336 as you do and put a simple Leupold VX1 20mm 2X scope on it, plenty of magnification for 100-150 yards.

I use a scoped 30-30, Love it. Like posted above I got the new Hornady ballistic tips, 3x9x40...... Shoots fine. I also like having the raised mounts for easy target aquisistion on close critters.

Cabela's has a scope with a BDC especially for the Hornady ammo. From what I've read it is pretty decent for $100.00. Although I'm a believer in more expensive scopes that one may be worth checking out.

a good scope and the new hornady ammo, u will love the results. i traded my ole trusty remington core-locked ammo in for the hornadys, and ill never go back. these 2 additives are a deadly combo for youngins and grownups alike! (including (me) the ones who hate to part with their 30-30s. finally, a legit reason to hush all those lever-haters who say a 30-30 is not a great deer rifle. :p

The 30-30 lever action certainly benefits from a good scope and the new Hornady ammo. I agree totally. But it is a great deer cartridge/rifle combination even without those additions. This has been known for 100 years by the people that understand you don't have to hit a deer with a cannon to kill it.

Don't ever let anybody poo-poo your old Winchester or Marlin. It'll do the job.

Thanks for the all the info. With all this good chat about 30/30's, the 7mag may end up collecting dust.
