Can weimerieners be made into REAL bird dogs (quail, pheasant) and are there any "hunting" strains bred in KY?
If I had my choice I would hunt Llewellin, but the wife says no more setters (long story), she wants a family dog. Just as I was cringing, thinking about some little pikanese or pug yipping aroung the house and gettin' under my feet she says "what about a weimeriner.
HALLELUJA! I thought...I could actually hunt with one of them.
So now I'm on a mission. Find a weimeriner before she changes her mind a wants a poodle or some other estrogen oozing furball!

I just read the post about which breed? I guess poodles are tougher than I thought. I just can't get the image of a pink pompom out of my head.
No offense intended.

Go out and buy yourself a good setter, a pair of hair clippers, and a bottle of mouse gray hair dye. Trim your setters hair as close as you can get it. Give him a bath in the dye. You will have to tell her they forgot to dock the tail and thats how you got such a good deal. By the time the hair grows back and the dye fades your wife will already be so attached to the "weimeriener" that you will be able to keep your new setter. If this works, then maybe she will realize just how much setters mean to you that you can have a whole kennel full!!!! p.s. I don't think my setters are family dogs. They are more like family members.

Yes weimaraners can be decent hunting dogs, but you need to go to some of the hunting kennels of the midwest to get one. They(like all breeds ) have a fault or two. No breed of hunting dog is perfect. They are pretty good one family dog(and watchdog), but really no better than my pointer.

a good hunting dog can always make for a good pet, but not all good pets make for a good hunting dogs. I would take Ky's advise & buy something from proven field stock, otherwise you loose out on the deal but the wife still wins.

Get a "Gun Dog" or "Pointing Dog Journal" magazine and check in the back. Do not be fooled into believing you can purchase one locally. They are a people dog and don't really kennel that well and stay puppies a LONG time.

There is a fellow with a kennel and farm around Booneboro named Don something, who has some fantastic Weimeraners. He is a trainer and lives and works on a farm he has set up for training. He also has quail and will plant some and let your dogs work there for a fee. He is a field trial guy, and his dogs are trained more in that fashion than just a regular foot hunting dog, but I have watched his Weims work and they stay relatively close and are completely steady to wing and shot. I am not sure if he sells Weims from his stock, but I would talk to him to get a recommendation on where to buy.
DO NOT buy from a breeder in the Salvisa area around Harrodsburg. My brother bought a dog from some guy over there and it turned out to have lots of problems, actually attacking my brother and the trainer I am referring to. Before my brother had the dog put down, he had it bred and its offspring were epileptic and had all kinds of other health problems.
I used to take my French Brittany hunting with his Weim and any birds that we would take over my dog, the Weim would run to them and actually gobble them up in two bites before we could stop him. His dog did not really have much hunting or pointing instinct to speak of. His dog also wanted to be in your lap constantly, and you had to beat it to get it to leave you alone.
That horrible experience turned me off to Weims as hunting dogs or pets, but my brother has since bought another that is a great pet and a slightly better hunting dog, although she still has little to no hunting instinct and not much of a nose.

The guy in salvisa lives about 4 minutes from me. I was going to check him out this weekend. He was reffered by a very trustworthy "bird dogger" I know but he said he never hunted with them, he just knew he bred them. Thanks for the advise.
If you find out more about the boonesboro guy or how to contact him let me know.
Thanks again for the tip.

It is killing me trying to remember the guy's name in Booneboro area. His first name is Don, I believe. I can sorta remember how to get to his farm. He is very friendly and wouldn't mind somebody just popping in. If you go just past the old fort, take a right, drive past the park and continue for two or three miles, the road crosses a creek and turn left about 1/4 mile on up the road. That road winds up a hollow and bears left (maybe a turn), goes steeply uphill and his place is on the left when the road levels out. He has an old farm house, about 100 acres and a aluminum kennel structure/barn behind his house. I believe he buys his birds from a guy named Charlie Taylor, who lives just outside of Berea. You might be able to find Charlie's number from the phone book. I am sure Charlie could get you in touch with Don (?). Don will also board and train for a fee if you would like.

MS- I know the man in Salvisa. If you want a weim that will hunt you need to head to the midwest. I really like the breed and truly hope that you will be happy with one. But the only thing you will get around here is a pet. Sorry about the unsolicitated advice. I realize wise men don't need it and fools won't heed it.
