I just Love that Movie! Did some research about the Quigley Sharps. I would love to own one in 45-110!
That rifle along with several other famous movie guns was on display in Louisville a couple of weeks ago during the NRA convention.

By the way, here is a pic of a 720 grain (!) 45-120 on the far right next to a standard 45-70 405 grain. Wow!

A friend of mine used to compete in 1000 yard black powder cartridge matches. He had a Winchester high-wall in 45-120 and I got to shoot it once. Incredible amount of recoil, but the slowest push I've ever felt.
The gun weighed over 16lbs, and was a blast to shoot.

I've seriously thought about rechambering a handi rifle in 45-120 or 50-90 but I don't reload and I don't believe anyone produces complete rounds for either.

If you look enough, you'll find just about any old obsolete cartridge still being loaded by someone:

Wow, 4 bucks a round. Ammo is skyrocketing and has been for a while.
Thanks westky, this might be the motivation needed to get a 45-120, but what to hunt with it? :p

That round will take anything that walks the earth. My friend that I mentioned earlier took a decent cape buffalo with a cast bullet out of a 45-120 several years ago. His PH was concerned that a black powder loading wouldn't have the penetration needed for a nearly straight on shot.... Bullet entered the right shoulder, traveled through the bone, lungs, organs, left ham, and was extracted by hand without the aid of a knife under the skin behind the left ham.... At over 120 yards.
The neat thing about those big old straight walled cartridges is that you can load them specifically for the situation. Download it to near .45 colt ballistics (you'll need lots of wadding to keep the powder by the primer) for just plinking around, or spice it up for brontosaurus...

Can you load the 45-110 and 45 -120 with smokeless power?

Yes. There were some 45-120 smokeless factory loads a few replies back.

I love that movie!
I have always liked Tom Sellick anyway. He's done some fine westerns and other movies, & is an active NRA member that once sparred with anti gun nutbag Rosie O'Donnell. Rumor has it that he may replace Charlton Heston as NRA president. This guy isn't afraid to go against the hollywood norm!
I've been eyeballing one of those Quigley sharps for a while...
