Creedmoor sights is what your looking for. With practice you can group at a 1000 yards.;)

For short range a cheaper Lyman fold down peep will work nice but as Raven stated the correct term is Creedmore and this is the sight the competive black powder shooters use to reach out to 1000 yards. Not bad for a 130 year round?

A lyman or williams peep site is the way to go if you don't want to use a scope.

love shooting my 45-70...especially when i baught the recoil pad for those leverevolution rounds lol the gun shoots great and all the farther i want to push it is 200 yards my question is, if i have a hard time seeing a 8 inch target at that distance (standard open sights,((because my front sight covers the entire target)) how do those competition sooters do it at a 1000 yards or would i b better off putting over under (aka see through) scope mounts on.......p.s. can anyone tell me about those scopes with multiple cross hairs in them thank you all so much

The guys that shoot at 1000 yards are aiming at a target that is 6'x6'. Still a VERY small area with open sights, and most end up having to walk their bullets into the target.
For practicality, I would absolutely suggest a scope.

If you want to push the distance to 200, install a scope.
I love a scoped lever action, but I wouldn't install the see-thru mounts. They cause you to stick your head up in the air, get your check off the buttstock, and then that 45-70 will pop you a good one. Keep the mounts low, install a 1.5x5 variable, and you're covered all the way to the practical range of the gun.

I've got these on one of my guns and they are amazing for farther distances. Just replaces your original sights. No drilling or effecting your rifle's value in any way. Don't come for your rifle, but perhaps there is a similar product somewhere? Somewhat similar to what the M1 carbine and garand use. Something worth looking into

Handi rifle is not listed but they provide the factory sight for the buffalo classic from H&R.

I always heard them refered to as tang sights. I guess a Creedmore is a little fancier tang sight which you don't need on an 1895. A williams peep or a regular tang sight will work just fine on an 1895.
