A friend of mine bought some rat shot for his .44 mag, said that was what he bought it for was to kill snake with, thought that was a lot of gun to carry just in case you seen a snake. Just an idea you might could use

I like an old H&R nine shot revolver. No problem cycling rat shot and you can stagger ratshot/solids too.

I would think most revolvers could be used as long as it was a decent sized caliber because they make shot shell in many different calibers.

I know this isn't what you are looking for, but this is what I do. See I like to have snake shot, and hollow points both on me.
CCI makes snake/rat shot for most common pistol calibers. I have some for 22, 40S&W, 38/357, 45ACP.
If I'm carrying a revolver I keep it in the first 2 chambers (then hollow points after that).
In a semi-auto I keep snake shot in the chamber, then a mag of hollow points (Speed Gold Dot for most of my guns) in the gun, with a mag loaded w/ the first 2 as snake shot in my pocket. That way I have one quick shot of snake shot in the gun, and can easily slip in another mag w/ a couple more. It will NOT cycle any of my semi-auto pistols, so I know I have to rack it after that first shot.
I got to test out a load of 40S&W on a little copper head while fishing a few weekends ago, it REALLY tore that snake up out of my little Glock 27.
The ones for my 22 and 38/357 have a little plastic cup on the front that holds in the shot, they spread REALLY fast when fired. The ones for my 40S&W and 45ACP don't have the plastic cap, they are made out of shaped aluminum so they will go up the feed ramp of an auto. They hold a much tighter patter and would probably actually shoot far enough for small game up to about 20 feet, haven't tried that though.

Taurus make a new revolver called the "Judge" that is a 410/45 colt revolver.

Wouldn't have pegged you for being afraid of a little snake. :D

I'm not sure if this company is still in business or not but at one time, there was a company in Ducktown Tennessee that made cheaper .410 pistols with a 4" barrel. They came in single shot, a double barrel SXS and a five shot revolver. The company was "Cobra" or something similar.

Cobray. Same folks that made the Mac-10. They bought out a small company's designs called Lienad (sp?). Or maybe the other way arround.
Anyway, they're the same.

Been itching to get one of these, would make a perfect snake/protection gun. The targets they have showing the .410 impact are awesome.

I have a T/C Contender 10 " barrel in 410 / 45 Colt. This gun is too big to carry for snakes but I've used it to dispatch a few. Handsdown I would feel better going the 410 route than ratshot out of any other gun. I've never even looked at one but the Taurus "Judge" would seem like the medicine for snakes in a carry pistol afield.

BM remember what happened to your neighbor that had one of those Judge pistols. Just do what I do carry your 870 and the problem literally disappears.

I was carrying a S&W .357 mag with rat shot until I met a 42" cottonmouth in our swamp. I now carry a Mod. 29 .44 mag with rat shot and worry about having enough gun.

Is that the swamp I think it is?? I need to send you a list of what we got out of there, I'll try to do that in the next day or two.
