yes if you are permitted to buy guns from KY FFL dealers then you can buy in Ohio but driving back to KY may be a different matter, the FFL may had to transport them to a KY FFL dealer

no you may not buy a handgun FTF out of state. According to federal law, an individual buyer can only buy a handgun in the state of his residence. A long gun can be bought in a neighboring state FTF though. You will need to get a FFL involved, which can be done for as little as $20

look under "Sales Between Individuals" about half way down the page here

+1 My father (a KSR) bought a Ruger 10/22 in OH. I have heard you can't buy hand guns out of state.

Baymont is right but just to clarify, you can actually buy a handgun out of state; just not face to face - meaning you can't just take it and go home. Whoever you buy it from (out of state) has to ship it to a Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder within your state of residence, typically a gun dealer but some people have licenses and do transfers for a fee. Then you go to your in-state FFL holder who received the firearm, fill out the 44...whatever, and if everything's good, it's yours.

This type of transaction is called an FFL transfer. Most gun dealers will do it for a fee.

And, like previously mentioned, long guns are good. You can buy those face to face in states bordering Kentucky and transport them back yourself.

the Ohio dealer could ship the pistol to a dealer in Kentucky which would be much simply, If I not mistaken , the dealer cannot do business away from the store except thru. the mail

follow up question..

I know what the "right" way is..

but how would they know? what if i bought it off someone at a flee market in ky?

what would they do if they found out when i was registering it, that it was registered in OH? is there a penalty?

I think the gun i was interested in is sold. but it made me think, do they expect a buyer to track down the origin of the gun before they buy?

But what if he wasn't a dealer? For example, if I'm an average Joe who lives in OH, but I work in Ky, couldn't I just bring the gun to work and sell it to someone there FTF with no issues?

And Johnboy, why would you register it? There's no requirement in a FTF deal to register a gun. For example, if you sell me a gun, I have no requirement to register it. Its a gun, not a car.

#1 depends on the company who you work for ,some companies do not want guns on their properly
# 2 if you live in Ohio but work in KY , you would had to tranport the gun across state lines
Do you work for ATF ?
