I've noticed here and on other sites that you don't see hardly any 50 mm scopes anymore like you used to. Also I've noticed suppliers and local stores have cut back their supplies of them. Can anyone shed some light as to why?

Don't know, but no great loss in my book. Too big, too heavy, too awkward. IMO they make a rifle look like a concrete block.
For my money about 36 diameter is big enough for a hunting rifle. I wish more companies would make a 3-9 power scope in 36 diameter.

I have numerous 50mm Leupold Vari X III scopes. I love them. In fact I would not consider buying anything else. They gather great light and are crystal clear in dim or snowy/cloudy situations. I have 3.5-10x50's and 4.5-14x50's. Mine are all fitted with the proper rings/bases and set just barely off my barrel. With that being said, I use mine alot out West where I have longer shots and need the features of these bigger scopes.
I have seen a few mounted with see thru rings. I would never use them. They do look like a "concrete block" sticking up. ;)
