I have a 2 year old black lab that I keep in a 10 x 20 lot. Here lately
I have been feeling bad about him being lonely, so I got a puppy from a customer of mine today and brought it home. When I introduced the
two, my lab went crazy, never seen him act like that before,{deep growling and barking}....Now what should I do?

Labs are extremely jealous dogs, well mine is anyways. Especially if you started raising him alone and then introduce another dog. I had my choc lab for 3 years before i got my german shepherd, he went crazy to, and still does when Im playing with the other dog. But now the german shepherd, a year old, is the dominant of the two and its not as bad.

We had the same problem a couple of years ago. We just kept the two dogs seperated for a couple of weeks till they got use to each other. Now they get along great.

emt, been in your shoes. We had a lab for 3 years then got a new puppy. In all honesty I really don't think there is much you can do, you just have to allow them to adjust to eachother over time. We had to keep them apart and when they got together we had to be ready to pull our lab away. We put both dogs in cages and left them in the garage over night. We kept their cages pretty close. Over time I think this helped. Also, when we put the dogs together and the lab got aggresive we would punish her (newspaper to the butt), this also helped. Before long she got used to the pup and knew that if she got aggresive she would be punished. In time they became best friends.

I have a lab and they are great friends. labs are a very pleasing dog,,, what I mean by that is they are pretty loyal to their owners in wanting to please them. If by chance your pet has not been around other dog too much you just introduced some comp for them . put the pup next to him/her for a while but show him/her they are still staw boss; meaning they have your love and your back 1st over the pup. you all will be fine after a while and they two dogs will grow to be buds, and yes a friend for you dog now is the right call.
The bad part is you will have more poop to clean up.

He was protecting his turf. Dogs are very territorial, especially if they are not well socialized and a 2 year old male is at the height of coming into his own and trying to assert alpha male status.

He will come around but I wouldn't leave the two of them alone together for a while.
