Alot of poor foresight on American automakers. Making huge autos till the end. Supposed to be 8,000 laid off.
Another thing alot of the dealers are refusing to take suvs as trade ins, I dont know about trucks or minivans, but I suppose they will refuse to take them next.
Those Hummers are going to be nice landscape ornaments in peoples yards.
There is a waiting list for the Prius hybrids now.
I here the market is big in Russia now for trucks, and thats helping to keep them afloat till they can hopefully get some more fuel economey autos on line.

I didn't and won't read an article from CNN. They are the main gloom and doom source in the media and wouldn't see a bright spot in the economy if it bit their azz.

Theres no spin or politics, its strickly business and is being reported in ALL media outlets.
Its just another example of our auto manufactors being one step behind the Japs.
Just watch 6 months before GM goes into full production cranking out cars that get 40 mph and the Japs will introduce their 70 mpg models.

I really loved the comment Hillery made in her speech on Tuesday night. Blaming Mr. Bush for all the Company sending their work overseas and to Mexico and closing down here in the States.......I guess she forgot it was her friggin Husband who signed NAFTA in as a Bill........While he was in Office....

Call me crazy but I'm sure that the SUVs and large cars will make a comeback. Maybe just not with gasoline engines.

I remember back in the early 80s my dad traded in the LTD for a Datsun because of gas prices. Then later in the years when the prices went back down the Datsun was traded for a Bronco II. Eventually the Bronco II was upgraded to a full-sized Bronco. Then the Gulf war hit around '91, gas prices went up and the Bronco II was exchanged for a Nissan. Then dad traded in my mom and left and haven't seen him since. So I don't know if he just liked to trade in cars or what the logic was. Anyway, it seemed like he wasn't the only one doing that and things seem kind of cyclic in the past and I haven't seen a reason to believe that it won't continue that way.

I just know that there are a lot of people out there who need those types of vehicles. I have a family of 6 and we currently need 3 car seats. There isn't a car out there that will hold that kind of cargo. Also, for our vacations we go camping. I don't think that any current hybrid or smaller car will be able to pull a trailer all that well. Technology will change and there will always be a market for trucks and larger vehicles. Instead of being a cash cow though it will be a niche market.

You are 100% right on this. Much of the outsourcing is because of Bill Clinton. He gets all the credit for the good economy when he was president which is unfair. The reason the economy was good was because of the internet and the stuff George #1 did.....

HIllary Clinton is one of the worst politicians ever!

NAFTA dosent have anything to do with the state of the US auto industry, their closing foreign plants. One in Mexico, Canada, Ohio and Wisconson.
Its supply and demand, now people demand low mpgs and they cant supply it. They have focused on big and luxury and revamping the old muscle cars.
Now their in trouble.
Its the same supply and demand with oil, we use 86 billion barrels but theres only 85 billion.

Just last week I drove a friend to Owensboro to purchase a new car. He had looked and researched several models and companys and made a decision to buy a new Honda Fit. The dealer would not knock off but $200 of the sticker price and the only reason they did that was it was a 5 speed and harder for them to sell. This was a cash deal no trade involved. I think you will see those smaller cars sell for as much or more then a full size car very soon.

They have used Hummers here with $2000 gas card with purchase (of course that is just tacked on to the final bill) My wife drives a little '06 econo-suv (mitsu) that gets good mileage. I drive these:

Both are gas hogs, but I wouldn't part with either until maybe $10/ gallon, maybe.
