I want to replace mine in my 17' aluminum bass tracker. What is everyone's experiences and opinions with either brand motor, and what model would you choose?

thanks for any help

Minn Kota Edge foot-control. Won't break the bank, and a 40-pounder will provide plenty of thrust for that boat.

Minn Kota's have always been a lot quieter than motorguides I've experienced. The one my buddy has on his boat you can turn that thing down to a crawl where as most motorguide's I have seen have 5 speed settings. Even on #1 you are still moving pretty good. Just my opinion!

I've had a Minn Kota Maxxum 48 pound, 12 volt on my 1860 Horizon for a few years. It's great on battery life, is quiet, tons of power and have had ZERO problems.

Both would be fine but I would make sure to get 50 pound of thrust or greater. I fish on KY Lake and the wind can be pretty bad so a higher thrust would be more beneficial.

Ford-Chevy-Dodge.... take your pick.

I've always had Minn Kota but my new boat has a Motorguide and it seems to be a good motor. It's a 46lb thrust on a 17' boat. I have only run it over level 3 once and I've been in some serious wind with it this spring.

I've had both and they are both good motors. The Minn-Kota is a lot quieter though. If you have one of those two on your boat, I would replace with the same brand. Their bolt patterns are different and you'll have more holes in your boat if you change.

I keep seeing the case of Minn Kota being quieter than Motorguide.

While that may have been the case in the past, it would be hard for me to believe that's the case anymore given the one that is on my current boat.

It's the first Motorguide that I've had so it may just be a fluke, but it's just as quiet as any Minn Kota that I have ever owned.

One thing that I do like about the Motorguide over the Minn Kota, I can loosen one knob and remove the trolling motor from the boat if need be.

Both are great motors and either will make a fine addition to your boat. Most of the differences being noted here are really more of a difference in technology than anything which has changed over the years (digital, etc.) This new technology and change in design on both these motors have brought them a long way from where they were just 10 years ago or less. I currently have a Minn Kota Pro Max 80 with life assist and love it so far after two years on the water. From what I have seen on all the latest models there are no big issues with either from a maintenance perspective and should last. A couple points that were made that I would consider would be poundage (you can never have too much IMO) and mounting holes as I would not want to put more holes in my boat unless I had too.

Thanks for all the help, looks like Minn Kota won by a landslide, lol. That's originally what I wanted as I've used some newer models on a few friends boats and they were awesome, just wanted some non-biased opinions. Can't wait to replace my current one.

Let me know if you are looking to buy a new one as I might be able to point you onto a good deal.

ive got a minn kota 30lbs thrust hand steered one and i think thats its not that strong for 30lbs. however, its a good, reliable trolling motor.
