I have a pup and would like to buy some San Juans to train with. Does anyone know somebody who raises San Juan's. Thanks

I have always heard that it was ilegal to turn San Juans loose...
but I don't know if it is or not. I use to raise San Juans and they do look like a wild rabbit. They burrow in the ground and I guess that wouldn't be good if we were over populated with them.

What is a San Juan?

GSP,
A San Juan is a rabbit that originated in Europe and behaves more like a wild rabbit than any other domestic breed. At least, that's what I've heard.

They don't do well in the wild but they do okay with training pups. There are all kinds of rabbits from Knot Heads to San Juans.

We have had San Juans before and they run out of steam fast . The best I have seen are smokey mountain cotton tails.

The reason it is illegal to release San Juan rabbits is because they sometimes carry a disease (don't know the name of it) that has a 95% mortality rate. Therefore, if San Juan rabbits were released into the wild there is potential for them to spread disease to wild rabbits, which would devastate the population.

Just for the record: 301 KAR 2:082 Section 2 Subsection 1 makes it illegal to import or possess (c) Wild European rabbit (also called the San Juan Rabbit)

An hour in the woods with my son's is worth a month in the house....
