I went a few times last year. I killed a jake too. I got to the place i was hunting and was talking to my uncle and we saw this turkey run across the gravel lane so i run to the back yard and shoot it. I was there for about 4 minutes maybe before i killed it.:D

I have never hunted fall turkeys. Can you call them in the fall and do they respond the same?

No, they dont gobble. Well I cant say that but its hard to call them in like that. I think the real way to do it is break up a flock then sit down where you broke them up at and call because they will flock back up. Ive noticed that they do this while deer hunting this last year. My friend busted up this flock then about half an hour later they started callin back to each other and flocked back up like everyone says.

Second that. i've noticed also that the birds are more vocal (yelps, kee kee's etc) in the Fall as a flock. It may only be because there are more birds together than in the Spring. Some flocks can get up to 100 birds depending where you are at. When they are all coming back it to "flock up" is awesome. They are loud and talkative!

I did hear a few gobbles this year while deer hunting but they weren't loud like in the spring. Any of you all notice that?

I saw a group of about 60 turkeys last year. They were about 1/4 mile away and were very loud.

I'll be out there. Usually hunt the fall shotgun season but plan to hunt archery season this year also. My shoulders and elbows are pretty well shot so will use a crossbow. Got the paperwork to use it a couple of years ago but didn't want to give up on trying to use my bow. Finally sold the bow cause the shoulders and elbows aren't going to get better.

HECK YEAH!!! I always fall hunt. I use a combination of different tactics too, but they never include decoys. (just never felt they were a necessity in the fall.) I'll start out early season either stalking or blind hunting where I've patterned turkeys and hopefully pull off my first two that way. I've not had a whole lot of luck busting them early season and usually the farms I hunt it's a combination of gobblers, hens, poults and jobblers as I call them (were jakes this spring, 2 years olds next, you know the real dumb ones!!!!) So it seems like with these large groups they don't flock back together too well, if it is just a group of hens and poults and you want a good tender sandwich it works well. As the first shotgun season rolls around I begin to call and focus my efforts more along terrain and food supplies in the woods and try to hug close to a flock in attempts to call a "satelite" turkey or just a curious bird away from the flock, many times I've called in the whole flock. Once on Thanksgiving day I had close to 90 turkeys infront of me and the gobblers were all strutting and gobbling like spring time and I shot a brute with 1 5/8" spurs right up the bung hole with a rocket side-winder. I do occasionally bust flocks at this time of the year. The most flock busting I do is the last part of the season, the final shotgun season. I find it more forgiving. The birds seem to congregate back together better and the birds where I hunt are on a definite winter feeding pattern and are predictable again, roosting in the same general areas, so if you mess it up, you can go back to square 1 later or wait until tomorrow. This is an excellent time to take an ole brute gobbler. I generally tend to wait for a fully mature gobbler in the fall, because they're just too much fun to hunt in the spring to settle for less, but I've killed alot of turkeys too. (don't blame anyone for shooting what makes them happy). But fall is an excellent time to thin down those gobbler stealers of spring, those dog gone hens!!!

Other than the head, that has got to be the most b-e-a-utiful (bruce almighty) bird I've ever seen. Just as impressive as your avatar. Nice pics.

I love to hunt in the fall. I personally take just hens! I feel that some one needs to harvest them. Just like deer hunting we need to take does and not just bucks! I like mammothcaevhunter, use alot a different tactics in the fall. I think my favorite is to try and get a entire flock of hens to come to my calling. Last year had a flock of about 40 birds al with in 30 yds. When I said get em 3 hens ended up next to the mashed patatoes! Me and my nephew killed ours at about 4 yards! Fall hunting is very exciting to me!

I'd say albino. Check out the white head and wing feathers. the tail does look like a Merriam but thats about it. The rest of the bird looks albino.

I usually don't specifically turkey hunt in the fall, just the occasional shot during bow hunting for deer. If I scout during the shotgun season, I'll carry my 870......and I did shoot a jake 2 years ago, but mostly limit my turkey hunting to spring.

nice post MammothCaveHunter
I fall turkey hunt. I like to use my lab. In the past I have just patterned the birds and waited em out like deer. I find that a big ol flock of hens with all those eyes dissecting the landscape are a really challenging hunting experience. I enjoy hunting in the fall and usually have more time to pursue them then.

Haven't heard of that, but then I have only been turkey hunting for a couple of years. Cool bird.

I tried to bowhunt from a blind last season by setting up at a field where the birds cross to get from one woods to another - I missed twice - once at a hen I overshot then another day at a tom I was just a tad bit low - no harm to either birds but man it was a rush - yes I'll practice up more from the blind and try it again - almost like deer hunting waiting on the birds though
