What kind of fish is this? I caught it in the Ohio River...I thought it was a SkipJack, I've caught several and always thought they were SkipJacks....but it doesn't look like the SkipJack pictures I looked up..

PIctures small. Looks like a shad to me. I've caught a few off grubs and roostertails before.

Here on the Canalton Pool we call that a "skipjack" or "cut bait".

Not a skipjack tuna, just a skipjack. A skipjack herring actually, related to alewives and tarpon. A mooneye looks just about like a gizzard shad but with a big mouth and sharp teeth. That's a big one too.

Skipjack are the best cut bait there is. Cut them up and freeze them for a rainy day. When we go to the Ohio I catch them on 3 or 4 jigs tied in a line under a weighted bobber. I also take my 4 weight fly rod and catch them on it, they fight just like a small tarpon, runnig and jumping like crazy. I let the kids mind the catfish rods and and I bait fish.

Thanks. Wonder what the state record is...if that is a big one, I've caught them bigger while Striper fishing. My biggest was probably close to 4 pounds.

Update: Elizabethtown angler Joey Dixon now holds the state record after catching a 3.1-pound skipjack herring from the Ohio River in the tailwater below Cannelton Lock and Dam on March 15. The fish measured 19 inches long and 12 inches around. Indianapolis angler Mark Landendorf briefly owned the state record after catching a 3.075-pound skipjack herring from the Cumberland River near Burkesville on March 13.

I know I've caught one close to 3.1 lbs.! I'll have to keep that in mind. Ofcourse now I'll probably never catch a big one again..the State record was caught at Cannelton too

There's plenty of skippies at Cannelton bigger than the one Joey caught a few years back. When they start headin' up in the spring, we take two coolers of ice and catch all we can on Sabiki rigs and twistertails. Get em' home and freeze for later use. Not nearly as good as fresh but still Premo bait for blues. FWIW we always catch some that are well over two lbs. when their piled up thick below the dam..............

You got that right!

There is no finer catfish bait.
