how to keep a bird from messing up feathers

Had a buddy that was wanting to get a bird for a full body mount i put him on two great birds but both birds messed up their feathers while flopping after the shot. is there anyway to keep this from happening for next year of course. one bird was a little over 21 lbs with an 11 inch beard and 1 1/4 spurs the other was 23 lbs with a 11 1/2 inch beard. one messed up feathers on his chest and the other on the outside part of the wing.

I would think good taxidermist could overcome a few messed up feathers.

It always help to run out and get them off the ground as soon as you shoot. When they are flopping on the ground is why the feathers fall out, but be aware it will bruise your shins up if your not carefull, lol.

Get on them quick is the only thing i know to tell you. But a taxidermist, a good one, as mentioned above should be able to fix it in most cases!

To limit feather loss, get to bird quick, grab a foot in each hand and hang on till he quits kickin'. BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET SPURRED. Keep it as clean and dry as you can. Keep it cool in the shade and get it to your taxidermist, before internals sours and spoils.

yeah i mad ethe mistake after making a 50 or so yrd shot on a bird of trying to pick him up so he wouldnt take off and boy did he i was still a youngin and didnt no no better cuz it was the first bird i had ever hunted and killied bymyself and he wooped me all over that field i finaly let em go and shot him while he was tryin to fly off lol them spurs will cut the heck outta u he cut my hand wide open:o
