yes, they can. if the carbon breaks the shaft will, if not broken, appear twisted or bent. discard any carbon arrow that has visual deformities. each time you shoot a carbon arrow, you should perform a flex test on each shaft. it is simple, grasp the arrow at the nodes, and flex. you don't have to bend it like a fishing pole, but merely deflect the shaft. this will allow you to check for cracks or circle breaks depending on shaft design.
i found out the hard way about checking my shafts more frequently. i blew up a fatboy at the shot. the arrow cleared the bow and me, somehow not damaging the bow or me. i am now a believer in the flex test.

I've heard some pretty gruesome details about situations like yours, anything you did that could have caused the damage or just a weak shaft?

The following link has some pretty graphic pictures in it. Keith gave some great advice.

You have to check 'em or your asking for trouble, especially those of you that shoot groups. If you have an arrow that has any kind of structural damage, throw it away. Arrows are cheap compared to a visit to the emergency room. I always to a check of my arrows while walking back to my bow.

Carbon arrows are tougher than aluminum though. Ive shot them through many things that would have destroyed and ruined an aluminum arrow. You do need to be more careful and make sure you check them on a regular basis and there are different rules when setting up a carbon arrow vs an aluminum, but for the most part they will last you longer and well worth the investment in my experiences. And the Bemans are a good resonable priced arrow. They were the first carbons I purchased and flew great.

i was at a local 3d tournament. i had shot the same shaft for the previous 16 targets without a problem. no arrows had impacted mine, i had not struck any others. to my knowledge, i did not hit anything in the target like rebar or a lost tip, but that is not really known. i was at full draw, the release tripped and the arrow literally exploded. it got the blood flowing, i had my then 7 year old son with me, and he did what he was instructed to do, stand behind the shooter:D
we all get complacent, i am still guitly of sitting or standing next to a shooter on a crowded range, or not flex testing after every shot after shooting a bag target.
as for carbon arrows durability, yes, they are tough. much tougher than aluminum for sure. they will survive impacts that would destroy the toughest aluminum. i still shoot carbon/aluminum arrows, the best of both worlds.
