what does it mean when you find quail and grouse in the same area
relative to habitat? age, size, density of cover etc.

i guess the better question would be to ask if grouse and quail can
successfully coexist in the same areas? my grandfather was raised
in elliott co. and always quail hunted but never even saw a grouse
until the 60's when he hunted some strip mines in boyd co. now it
seems there's no quail to speak of around his farm, with a few
grouse here and there.

Quail and grouse habitats will overlap, especially in old field edges. Quail prefer the grassland most of the time but will forage and escape into woodland edges. Certain times of the year, they feed heavily on ash, maple and locust seeds.

Grouse prefer young forests with high stem densities, feeding on grapes, greenbriar, greens like christmas fern and ragwort, and occaisionally use the grassland edges, for brood habitat where the young are feeding on bugs, and for clover, and soft mast like blackberry and raspberry. Along strip mines you will likely encounter both birds where their preferred habitats meet.
