Have you ever been called or threatened by someone who got your name and address from your trap tag? I need responses as soon as possible. We're looking at a change in the trap tag to an option for an issued ID number for the tag and any questions as to whether the trapper or hunter is in the wrong can be handled through the CO. Do you trappers like this idea?

I like the idea! Although I have never been threatened, I have spoken very resently with my local CO about trap tags and the possability of anyone having my information available to them (You know the line of work that I am in!). I told him that some other form of an ID number or marking should be enough. Maybe the F&W Office can come up with some permanent ID number for those of us that trap and keep it on file. But that is what you just said isn't it!?

I personally would love to see tags go to an ID number instead of my address, the way I see it if you would steal my trap I dont want you knowing my house address.

Yes it needs to be changed and same goes for treestands that have to be tagged on wma's. Had three stolen this year and the people now know were i live!

WHY EVEN HAVE TO TAG? Today there are so few trappers that most all CO'S know who traps in their district and where they live . Anyway after a coyote or coon is caught , most name tags are greek:D

I haven't been contacted by anyone that got my information from a trap tag. I did have a trap thief remove my tag and leave it in the trap bed for me. Who knows, they may have left the trap if they didn't know it was mine.lol

I trapped to pay my way through college. I did have people contact me and complain about their dog(s) getting in my trap on someone elses property.

Commercial fishermen are given a set of tags for gear with a unique number ( it changes each year though). I see no reason a unique number could not be assigned to a trapper where he could have tags printed with the number. A simple call from a field officer to dispatch would verify the owner or if the number was bogus.

A numbering system would be helpful to have:
County code 3 digits , then last 4 of social, then 3 or 4 digits to identify the licenses sold per county

Say I'm the first to buy a license in Woodford

120XXXX0001 the XXXX is my last 4 of my social

The only problem with a permanent number asigned to you is if you don't continue to buy a license, conversely who wants to change tags every year on their traps and snares (that's the only arguement for keeping the current method)

Interesting thought, especially with the anti movement occurring these days...

At 1400 licensed trappers now in the state the number would never be too high. It would eliminate hotheads from retaliating or the AR nuts from coming to your door. The only time I was anonymously threatened I had permission to trap on the property and the other person did not have permission to hunt. He called my house and told my grandparents he would be waiting on me in the morning over a beagle that wasn't hurt. he also stole five traps after he started looking for them. I would like to see any disagreements handled through the CO to find out who actually is in the right and who is in the wrong.

I think this is a excellent idea. One I believe that has been adopted in my home state of Pennsylvania. I need to order me some more tags so I'll hold off until we here something.

I don't trap but it sounds like a great idea. And I think it is about stupid to have your name and address on a trap these days, with all the anti-hunters/trappers we have in todays world!

Great idea, if its a perm. #, don't want to re-tag every yr.

I would love to see us be issued a number instead of having my address on my traps.....

Im all for it. A buddy of mine in TN had a buddy who had a trap taken then thrown thru his window:rolleyes: because his name and addy was on the tag.

i have not trapped for several years but i am thinking of trying it this year and i think you have a great ideal about the number and not the address.

I would be all for it. I have never been threatned but I have had peole call and tell me a dog got caught in my trap while they were coon hunting or rabbit hunting. I wouldnt have gotten those calls if my address wasnt there. One guy didnt threaten but said he didnt see why I had to trap during coon season. I asked why he had to coon hunt during trapping season and got a dial tone. We all share the woods and everyone has the right to be there, with permission of course.

Hi guy,
I missed you at the meet. Thought sure you'd be there. You missed some good food.

If I'm not mistaken didn't the state have some type of trapper number years and years ago?

I'd also like to see a ID number for each trapper that does not change.

yeah I missed it before I realized it. I was looking forward to going but just got side tracked. Hopefully I will be able to make the fall meet.

I never have but it does kind of make me nervous. There are a lot of people out there that are anti trapping.
Many of my friends have traps stolen or at the very least tripped.

I make a pretty big effort to hide the spots I trap for this reason....

I don't see a reason to change, unless they add the dept. phone # to the tag as well. I've been contacted a couple times about catching someones dog. The people then steal your trap, and call. Then you can have them prosecuted, if necessary. With a generic ID#, most would just throw your trap away.

Just my .02 cents.

How about a least giving them the option of either? That way those that have everything tagged do not have to re-tag unless they want and those that want to can?
Sounds like a good plan with the ID #

Yeah, I'm all for that, let me have that option, it doesn't matter if my name is on it or not. I have several dollars worth of tags, I would hate to have to reorder and retag everything. Last time I bought tags, I bought two hundred, used about half.

Sorry,
My wording was misleading. The deal we want is the option to have either/or. I don't want to change my name tags and won't get the ID numbers until I order new. When I do I'll get the id number for the future. As far as thieves giving the trap back I don't think that will change either way. I would like to know if the trapper or hunter is in the wrong if either is. Sometimes either the hunter or trapper is trespassing and we need to know that.
