I decided to join my Dad and brother this past Saturday for a closing day goose hunt. Although I shot some ducks earlier in the year, this was my first and only goose hunt of the season. We didn't see a single goose up to 9:30, and my Dad and brother had to leave. I stayed on and saw a lot of birds after 10:00, but they were headed to parts unknown. Had one circle low while I was working some others. Because he was a single and others were flying, I really didn't plan on shooting him. I let him go twice before I noticed he had a green neck band. On his third turn, I shot him. Upon inspection, he also sported a leg band. My total for the season: one double-banded honker.

I actually saw two other banded geese that same morning. One had a blue (may have been green) neck band and the other had a white band. I'm looking forward to finding out where this bird was banded. I'm not going to mount him. He was a very young bird and very much on the smallish size. I've shot 6 banded ducks before, but this is my first verified banded goose. (Verified meaing the only guy who could've killed the bird. I've been in goose pits on several occasions when a banded goose flew in. Needless to say, everyone in the pit claimed they shot it, and since everyone was shooting at the same bird, everyone was probably right. In any event, I don't have to share this band with anyone else.)
