Well guys I typically run and gun but this year I changed up a little. Been hitting the lake in the mornings and trying to catch a few muskies and then hit the woods for an afternoon hunt. I have had a gret time doing both.
Well each day I tried to make it to my blind but could not because turkeys were already out in the field. I had to work my way up the field by creeping about 10 yards deep in the woods. Both days I made it about to the blind but decided to sit down on the field edge rather than spook the turkeys.
Yesterday I was sitting watching a group of hens and low and behold one had a beard. We knew there was a hen with a beard back there but had never got her within range during season. We first saw her about five years ago. She kept working my way until she stepped into range. 20 yards and she was down. The mossberg 835 with the 3.5" Remington 5 shot is lethal.
She had an 8 inch beard (was as good as some gobblers I've seen);).
Today again I left the lake and decided to try to fill my second tag. Same senerio, field has turkeys in it and I have to sneak up the edge. Getting with a few yards from the blind without getting busted I decided that is far enough. I lean up against a tree and wait to see what happens. In no time at all 5 jakes feed towards me. They get so close I can hear them blink:rolleyes: but at one time they were less than 6 feet from me.
After they leave I see a long beard but he disappears. 30 minutes later he is back and heading my way. He finally steps out at 20 yards and the old mossberg does its business. Turkeys scatter as I run up to the downed bird. As I get there my first thought is OMG, this thing is huge. It turned out to be my biggest gobbler ever weighing in at 27 lbs sporting an 11 1/8" beard with 1 1/4" spurs.
Killed both these birds and did not make a call. Big change of pace but I killed my first bearded hen and my largest gobbler. Sorry to be so long but here are pics.
