Do the turkeys in the areas you guys are hunting start gobbling around 10 or 11. Thats whats goin on here in mason and lewis county where im huntin. They gobble on the roost then nothin till bout 10. Ive also noticed they gobble more when its cloudy.

It may be that the hens have gone to their nest and the gobblers are alone again. Thats why they will gobble later in the day to try and find another lady friend.

I noticed that yesterday hunting public land in Owen County. Problem was that they were on private land and unwilling to come my way. I guess they're not desperate enough yet.

If they are doing that in your area it would be a good time to bust one - the hens are on nest and they are calling for others that are not - if you get a willing unough bird you could tag one - but if your sneeking through the woods calling every so many yards and one answers set up very quickly because most will be there in the blink of an eye

Thats the problem. Yesterday when this happend i had to be at work at like 2 and it was already 12:30 so ididnt have much time. Today i went with one of my friends and that was a bad idea. He wanted to drive to 10 different farms and if one didnt gobble when he blew that crow call we left. I should have went by myself.

I have also noticed that.....seems to me like the birds are vocal in the morning till they hit the ground then they open back up around ten or so and go till one or two.....

What I saw was that the youngest gobs were trying to hang in tight with the hens and not displaying. The older guys were displaying for the young males and trying to block access. I ran into this twice during the week-- once in plain sight at 200+ yards, and the other in a grove of oaks that was impossible for me to penetrate without being seen.

I did something I had never done before, and it worked only partially. I had out a Transfan, and I gobbled. It moved the gobblers away from the hens a little, but once the hens moved off the gobblers went with them.

Something was up with them this year. I've seen this behavior before, but I had gobblers elsewhere that were more inclined to come to calls. This year, this behavior seemed to dominate a lot of late morning activity. For all my troubles, I only got one gobbler free of the hens. He's now in the freezer.

I have found over my 15 years of turkey hunting that birds will gobble throughout the entire day at different intervals. For example, where I hunt I can pretty well plan on birds gobblin off the roost then at 8:30 or 9, again around 11 and 1:30. Generally the last chance I have at locating a willing bird is around 4:30. After that I have to think about getting between them and their roost, ambusing one in a field etc. If your hunting time is limited, try to get out around these times.
