Fellow turkey hunters! I just moved to the area from Washington DC where my wife and I worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for the last four years. I am wondering if you know of any public land near Lexington where I might be able to get my 8 yr. old son on a bird? I put a few ad's in the Herald Leader looking for land to lease but didn't get any responses. I'm originally from NWest PA and have hunted since I was old enough to follow my dad around the big hardwoods of the Allegheny National Forest, and I'd like my son to experience the same feeling of hunting passion I did while growing up.

Thanks,

Yan

Dr. James R. Rich WMA in Owen County is a good place. Hilly but not crowded. I have friends that hunt in that area a lot. I have in the past but don't any more due to living in the Ashland area of the state. I had several birds respond and they aren't as call shy as in other areas since the area isn't over crowded in the spring.

Another place near there is John A. Kleber WMA in Owen, Franklin counties. It has similer topography but seems to have a few more hunters on it.

James R Rich is 1,704 acres, while Kleber is 2,349 acres.

Also the Daniel Boone National Forest has a lot of good hunting in it. you can be in part of it in about 1 hr from Lexington if you take I 64 East.

Other than that I would say to get the KY Div. fish and wildlife hunting guide at a store or download from the Internet and just look at the locations and go from there. There is a lot og good public land in KY. just be careful in the modern gun season for deer, there are a few goof balls out there.

What does your son hunt with? My first shotgun was a Remington 870 youth model 20 gauge. It would chamber 2.75" and 3" magnums shells. I just found this year, (which I may have overlooked years before) but Wal-Mart has now begin to carry 20 gauge turkey chokes. I bought one with the intention of having my wife go out one morning. Although I havent patterned it yet, I would suggest looking into this for the younger hunters to get them started.

Thanks for the info! It's strange that I hunted more w/in two hours of Washington, DC than I have at any time in my life. Great waterfowl. How does a person find land to lease?

thanks

Spike,

Sounds like we use the same gun. Hard to beat a Rem 870 youth - though for a little guy it can still produce a large kick. I chambered down to 2 3/4" because the 3" was a little too much for him. What's the hunting like in Cadiz? Isn't that where Night and Hale are from?

Thanks

The hunting in here is ok at times. It just seems here lately there are more and more people from out-of-state leasing up every piece of ground we have. I just cant afford to compete with their money. And yes, Knight and Hale originated here in Cadiz. They sold the company some years ago and the guy who bought it moved it further south. Oh, by the way, the church I attend is the one Harold Knight and David Hale attend as well. They are really good people.

Yan-

I went to Murray State in Calloway County Kentucky (very southwestern county next to Land Between the Lakes) I work in henderson county and live in Indiana. There are a lot of good hunting opportunities in Henderson County. Big deer, waterfowl, and turkey ops. Also, check Ohio county. I've heard over the years of quite a few leasing opportunites. Big deer in that county too.

Yan,
You'll find Daniel Boone National Forest about like Allegheny National Forest, except,
DBNF is larger and has fewer hunters than Pa.. Lots of turkey, if you can handle the "hilly' terrain. Many of the "little" WMA get crowded quick.
Good luck.
