OK well i just bought my first mouth call, and I want to learn to use it properly. What is the best way to learn and what are some tips. I can make sounds but they sound nothing like they should.

First of all make sure that you have it in properly. The cut in the reed should be facing down towards your tongue. Place the mouth call on the roof of your mouth, towards the back, but not so far that you gag. Curl your tongue under so that the tip of your tongue is on the rubber of the reed and lightly touching it.
Now when you breath out you mouth our blow you should have some sort fo a sound.
Try this. Tuck Tuck Tuck Tuck, Tic tic tic, tac tac tac
Will take a lot of practice but you can master it. Also make sure that it is good and wet. Leave it in your mouth a few minutes before you try to make too much sound.

Get a tape with all the various turkey sounds , so, you not what a cluck, yelp, purr, cut, cackle is suppose to sound like. Learn to duplicate.

Don't bet on it. I finally threw mine away because I got tired and admitted defeat.

Some mouth calls are easier than others, so if you have problems, it may be the call and not you.
I use a Primos Stacked Frame. When I was first learning to use a mouth call back in the late 80's, I tried, among others, a Knight & Hale, a Quaker Boy, a call that was touted by Mark Drury (this was before he started MAD), and a Primos.
I learned that the Primos fit me best. To this day, my favorite call is the Primos Stacked Frame Deadly Double. Easy to learn, and very raspy. Although I carry 2 or 3 with me, that call has brought in more toms than all of my other calls combined.
Primos has a combo package that has 3 calls and a CD with instructions. I know that one of these combos has a Primos True Double which is a very easy call to learn on. You can also look at the back of a primos mouth call package to see what words you need to enunciate while calling.
If I remember correctly, you start by simply blowing air through the call until you can consistently get a sort of high-pitched shrill sound. Once you can consistently get that shrill sound, you then start to learn a yelp by saying "che-yawk". The yelp is actually a double syllable sound which blends together. Say that word while blowing air up out of your diaphragm (not out of your mouth).
Eventually, that "che-yawk" will start to sound like the first note of a yelp. With a little practice, you will shorten that down to a simple "chawk" and you end up with a full yelp when you string a group of "chawks" together.
To make a cluck, I say "plock". Once you learn the yelp and the cluck, you're 3/4 of the way home. After that you can work on cutting sequences, purrs, fly-down cackles and a whole lot of other calls.
As far as I'm concerned, a mouth call is by far the most versatile call, b/c it allows you to add inflections into your calls that aren't available with box or slate calls. It also frees up your hands, so you can use a slate or box calls to sound like a second hen at the same time.
Good luck.

Don't think you will be able to master it overnight. It took me a while but I am pretty good with it now. Practice, Practice and more Practice. After you're done with that Practice some more. It takes time, be patient and you will be the envy of your hunting buddies. Good Luck.

The best mouth call to start with is a single reed then you can go up from there - try to do a song with it and you'll hit the right tone and it'll come easy after that

I have found the Primos Sonic dome to be the easiest to use so far. I have not mastered it yet but I'm getting there. Good luck

I have the cd too and it is great and I get the same looks as you in traffic. Thats what I used to learn. Only thing I have trouble with time to time is purring. I hate the sonic domes though...they don't feel right in my mouth.
