I'm not defending Jeff's actions at all, but you gotta put this into perspective. It was a student "Racer Patrol" and not an actual officer. He's a good kid who did something stupid, like a lot of 20 year-olds. At least it wasn't another drug offense of past years.
Dusty Luthy had a pretty good piece about it in the Paducah Sun:
'Prank gone bad' lands QB felony charge

MURRAY, Ky. - Murray State quarterback Jeff Ehrhardt has been charged with second-degree robbery, a Class C felony, for what athletic department officials called a prank gone bad.
Police received a report at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday of a Racer patrolman being pushed and having his ticket book stolen in the parking lot of the Murray State intramural fields, according to a university police report. A witness identified Ehrhardt, who surrendered to the campus Public Safety office where he returned the ticket book.
According to the report, Ehrhardt, 20, a sophomore, admitted to the incident after being bet $20 that he wouldn’t do it.
“This was a prank that has gone bad,” Athletics Director Allen Ward said. “It was a bad decision and a mistake, definitely. I think a lot of Jeff. He’s a good kid. He’s a leader on our team. This is not at all indicative of what Jeff Ehrhardt is all about and the way he conducts his life both on and off the field.”
Ward said he has already handed down some internal discipline, but will wait to see if further action is required.
The report said officers indicated that force was used in taking the ticket book.
Ehrhardt’s court date is April 29. The charge carries a potential prison term of up to 10 years.
He could not be reached for comment.
Ward and Racer football coach Matt Griffin had not read the entire police report, but Griffin said Ehrhardt’s character has set him apart during his two years at MSU.
“This is one of the best young men I have ever recruited,” Griffin said, “and I will stand by him with this and whatever comes to his table the rest of his life.”
Griffin is also imposing some disciplinary actions, including limiting Ehrhardt’s time on the field.
“As this thing plays out,” Griffin said, “there is a standard of accountability, and they all know it, and there will be a consequence and it will be taken care of.”
Ehrhardt won the 2007 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year award, leading the conference with 2,567 yards passing and 21 touchdowns. He rushed for 375 yards and five TDs.
“It’s tearing him up pretty good,” Ward said. “Very remorseful, took total responsibility, was accountable for his action, exactly the way I would have expected Jeff to respond.”

all for $20? I think your math is correct Art
What struck me about all of this is that basically it sounds like his athletic ability, i.e VALUE TO THE UNIVERSITY, makes this all just a "prank gone bad". Whatever. It was a stupid, illegal act and the idiot should be treated like anyone else would had they been so stupid.
I don't care how you cut it, accepting $20 to harass or steal from someone, especially a safety officer is beyond stupid. I figure he walks from this with a minor slap on the wrist worst case.

A felony?
It seems like an awful lot of things are felonies, considering the lifetime "penalty" of having a felony conviction (unable to own a gun, vote).
I have to admit, I sometimes feel a bit of animosity toward those glorified hall monitors that prowl the parking lots (I swear I didn't know the city sticker had expired). Never had the urge to knock one down and steal his book, though.
As I understand it, members of the Racer Patrol are sworn officers of the law & thereby can legally issue a citation or even arrest someone. I heard that a friend & frat brother of the Racer Patrolman in question offered Ehrhardt $20 to knock down his fellow frat bro & take his ticketbook. Ehrhardt is 6'4" & lives in the weight room, the Racer Patrol guy is 5'8" & spends most of his time in the library. So, Ehrhardt was able to accomplish this task quite easily. Ehrhardt neglected the fact that the Racer Patrol guy is a sworn officer. While I don't believe Ehrhardt was actually trying to injure the Racer Patrol guy, Ehrhardt's actions certainly show a certain disregard for the Racer Patrolman. Coach Griffin's comments & the fact that Ehrhardt won the 2007 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year award aside, Ehrhardt should face the exact same penalty anyone else who had done the same thing would face.

For $20 I'll stop the big brown truck, take off all my clothes and tackle a cop and steal his gun and run around screaming.:D J/K, I'd only do that if my route was on Murray's campus, because then I would get away with it.:D

Come on it was just a campus security geek. Wasnt it a student as well?
A narc/tattletail?
We caused all kinds of trouble for poor Security Guard Gary in Danville(including constantly stealing his meter maid truck) and he was a paid professional. In fact I think the only reason he didnt kick our arses was that he was gettin paid and decided we werent worth the trouble.
Good guy ole Gary. If I ever see him I plan to apologize profusely.
