Well one of my boys is really disappointed. It started yesterday am .We were set up and i called in 4 gobblers. When they got close enough to shoot they spooked a little and started to leave so he took the shot and missed. We went back this am and was in the blind early. When it got good and light i gave e few soft calls. In a few minutes i see 3 gobblers to our left.He got ready and they walked up to our decoy and he shot and missed again.I rechecked the pattern on my gun and it is shooting a great pattern. We will be back out come saturday.Wish him luck because he is pretty blue right now,

missing is a big portion of my hunting drive. if we killed everything we pursued, it wouldnt be much fun:)

Hey Bob, I know what you mean. My boy shot and missed a big gobbler this morning. Just like you, I will let him have the chance again next weekend. Tell your boy to hang in there and aim small.

At least he got some birds in close - missing is part of it sometimes unfortunately - third time charms

I hear you bobtownhunter. I called two in for my 12 year old son yesterday morning. The first time they cam thru they were a little to far away (for his 20 gauge). So, I let them pass and move on out the hill and then we slipped 40 yds. further up the hill and I called them back. To make a long story short, the lead gobbler came thru an opening at about 27 yds. I called and stopped him, gave my son the kill signal , he pulls the trigger and "click" I had him re-cock the hammer and try again, another "click" By that time the birds knew something was up and they putted on out the hill. I checked the shell and the it was a bad primer I guess, the gun did it's job. My son just sat and looked at the ground for about 5 minutes. I was tore up inside, but I tried to play it off like that was just hunting. Well, I've committed to getting him a bird, so he will be with me opening day next weekend. Of all the frustrations that I've been thru as a hunter, that was about the worst one.

Tell him not to feel bad. My oldest daughter missed a bird at 25 yards. Two beautiful toms came in on a string and gave her a wide open shot, but being the first time she had ever turkey hunted, her nerves got the best of her. She cried for a few minutes until I let her know that the memories we make in the field is what really counts, not the kills! I let her know how proud I was of her and that it was a memory I'll never forget. I would have liked for her to have bagged her first bird, but it was still an awesome morning!
I'm sure your son and my daughter will have many more opportunities in the years to come.

I don't know if there is a worse feeling than squeezing the trigger and not seeing your bird floppin but flying off. I'm sure its happened to every turkey hunter at some point. I know it happened to me on my first tom I shot at I was 9 and dad still rags me about it because after i missed I had tears in my eyes haha I was sick! and Ive missed my share since!

Tell him no big deal, cause you know what, it happens to all of us. I have several times myself including a chip shot last year. My son who has taken birds 3 years in a row during youth weekend missed 4 times in one day when he first started. We now call that spot the "lead mine", lol. I worked with him during the summer on shooting and then installed a Bushnell Red Dot scope and he has not missed since.;) Make sure he is keeping his head down on the gun and not watching the turkey plus he might be a little afraid of the recoil or not picking a feather/specific spot to shoot at on the bird. Just some things to look for in trying to help him.

Good luck but don't sweat it too much, he will come around!
