I have always wondered how to age turkeys? I know a jake is a 1 yr. old but after that I'm lost. Also how long is the average lifespan of a bird?

Two year old birds have short spurs not real sharp. After that it's a guess. I killed a bird once that had a 1" spur on one side and 1 1/8 on the other. Everyone called him a 3 year old. I'd taken the leg band off, he was banded 8 years earlier and released to stock that county.

Basically, you can tell jakes and two year old birds, the rest are older than 2....

As a general rule, the more pointed and curved the spur, the older the bird, to say a bird is exactly 3 or 4 is really saying you know it's older than 2....
