Alot of states are like that. Kentucky was like that up until about 7-8 years ago.

As far as why, this is what i heard: It gives the birds the afternoon hours to go about their normal breeding/nesting routine without pressure from being hunted. from what i can gather, and this part is opinion only, they do it in states where the population is not quite what they are capable of holding. Like i said, this is just my opinion, so if i am wrong someone correct me.

Its just one of the tools biologist use in regards to harvest limits.

When biologist set season limits, they do it like this. They say, our state has 500,000 turkeys. We can allow hunters to shoot 75,000 birds a season. And we know that hunters average about 6,000 turkeys a day before 12 noon, and another 1,500 after 1. So that means we can allow the season to be 12 days if we end at noon everyday. Or we can allow allday hunting, and only 10 days of hunting.

It all goes into setting season harvest limits. Its the same reason why you can take 2 turkeys a year, but only 1 a day.

I always read it is to prevent hunters from accidently busting hens of the nest.

I Also Believe It Is For A Unmolested Period For Hens To Nest. I Also Beleive This Is The Best Way To Go As Far As Keeping A Good Population Of Birds. I Think Mo Is The Best Turkey Hunting Around And They Have Always Been Like This.

It also seems that the states north of us are the only ones that do this. Are any states in the south this way?

KY did start out like that and I'm sure it was for good reasons - possibly to let the birds nest - to ensure a good population later - whatever the reason it worked but you know I can honestly say after an all day hunt I struggle to get out of bed the next day but somehow do
