I would like to get started in trapping but don't even know where to begin. how do you set a dirthole trap and where are the best locations. also what traps work best? and how do you keep from catching unwanted animals?

mikeB,
First you need some literature. Check out Minnesota Trapline @ Minnesotatrapline.com. They have a complete line of anything related to trapping. There is a section which includes books on trapping, anything you could possibly want to learn about. Dirthole sets are best learned by going out on a trapline with someone. As far as best traps go I recommend a 220 conibear. It will catch just about anything. As far as unwanted animals is concerned are you refering to domestic animals such as dogs and cats?
Mike, Good luck on starting out. Best advice is read everything you can lay hands on. You have many months now to do so. One magazine I really like is Fur, Fish & Game. I still think it's the best mag on the market for any outdoors sport.
Dirtholes can be easy or tricky as can be. Depends on the IQ of the critter that walks by it.
Trap size depends on your target animal. I don't know much about yote trapping. Fox size, use a #2 coil or similar. Dirtholes work about anywhere. Find the travel route. Look for an attraction point at the end of a field, or an attraction point like a solo tree in a field, corner fence post, whatever. Look for something that you think an animal would normaly make a point of going to visit.

I am interested in trapping myself. I was recommended the old Stanley Hawbaker book on trapping. I ordered this, I hope it is the right one.

mikeB,
If you trap long enough you will eventually catch a dog or two. I've snared many beagles which have all been released unharmed. They are so timid that they simply lay down and wait for someone to come let them out. I've learned to pull all traps and snares just prior to the weekend in areas where I know hunters will be running beagles on the weekend.
