View Full Version : Trip to the grocery yields insight
I went shopping today for some groceries. I got to thinking while I was there that the grocery store shows so many problems that exist in our society today, only in different forms.
Pulling up in the parking lot, I notice 2 glaring things. First, there are shopping carts EVERYWHERE. Krogers is nice enough to put out cart collection areas all over the parking lot. You'd be hard pressed to get more than 20 yards from one at any point. Yet somehow the carts are all over the place, some only feet from the collection station. A little gust of wind and it's ding city baby! Insurance rates are no cheaper because of this. Reasoning for this? Pure laziness, what else could it be?
Secondly, I notice that the parking lot is empty once you get about 40 yards out from the door. Keep in mind it's cool here today but there's nary a cloud in the sky. However, there are people sitting in their cars eyeing that close spot occupied by a car where someone is loading their groceries. These people would rather sit in their cars for minutes, waste gas, and block traffic just to be 30 feet closer to the door. I have the hardest time understand this, but maybe that's why our society is so fat these days. Most people view that extra 50 foot walk a workout that MUST be avoided at ALL costs.
So now I'm in the store and this is where I believe the differences between men and women are most apparent. Women don't care about ANYONE but themselves once behind a shopping cart. They will manage to somehow block an entire isle while talking on a cell phone and half heartedly looking for the best deal. I find this TOTALLY inconsiderate and I personally make an effort to show my frustration through either body lanuage or bullish shopping cart maneuvers.:D Women will also stand in front of one item that they are not even interested in, all the while I wait patiently behind them. They KNOW they are in my way, but they choose to stay there and look at every possible item, in the case next to the one I'm trying to get to.
Finally, I navigate my way to the checkout. I have just one question. If you are going to write a check and you know this before you even go to the store, why do you wait until the the total pops up before you dig through that 5 gallon purse to find the checkbook? Personally, if I were to revert back to the mid-20th century and write a check, I'd have it filled out BEFORE the last item is scanned so all I had to do is fill in the amount.
Now that you wasted 5 minutes of my time for failure to be prepared in line, you must now be ready to leave, right? WRONG? Now we see that the bagger is usually an elderly person or a young kid who you can tell just isn't cut out for much more of a mental challenge then placing an item in a bag. Honestly, I feel for these people. I cannot sit there knowing that there are people waiting behind me and just watch these poor people struggle to do this task quickly. It is my duty to help them out. My arms work just as well as theirs, it saves my time as well as others, and it makes me feel like I'm not a lazy SOB who is "above" helping someone if it is at all possible.
You can learn a lot about human nature at the store.
(sorry, I was bored and this was an attempt to entertain myself and you guys as well):D

Yeah there is another thing that really gripes my arse......There are probably 20 check out lanes at most grocery stores.....How many are open at any one time.....Five or Six at the most? Then they come up with the do it yourself check out but do they offer a discount? Not hardly....

I saw a study on human nature once, I think it was on 20/20? But anyway, they timed how long the average person, talked on a pay phone, I think the average, was like 3 minutes. They then threw the variable in, they had a stranger walk up and and wait, to use the phone next........the average time more than doubled!:D
I saw this very thing at a gas station the other day, the station was a few cents cheaper on the gallon, than the compitition, so........there was a crowd at the pumps, and cars waiting in line. I sat there and watched as, more than 75% of the customers, just had to wash their windshield, after they pumped their gas.......I thought this was the most amusing thing I had seen in a while. I even watched 2, different ladys, pump their gas, hang the pump up, and get back in their car, and put makeup on, before going in to pay............and the whole time cars lined up 3 or 4, deep behind them. :DLMAO

I have mastered the U-scan. I can be in and out before the person next to me has even figured out how to scan their Kroger plus card even though they have repeated this process about 3 times a week for the previous 5 years..
Barney, you are on to something there. Women seem to exhibt this behavior much more often.
I'd rather pay 10 cents more per gallon then sit in a line for 25 minutes. Maybe even 25 cents more.

All kidding aside, I have watched this behavior, as a vendor, at the local farmers market fo 20 years. It is true women exibit this more than men. I would say, 90% of the women, will pick up and squeeze, 10 tomatoes, for each one they buy, where as its the exact opposite in men. THANK GOD for men! After a dozen women shop at my stand, and bruise, most of the tomatoes on display, a man will most times come by and just sackem up, without even lookin:D

Damn, that credit check must've really touched a nerve:D J/K, I know what you mean though especially about the parking. There was an empty space one car over from me one day and someone pulled up and would not take that space so they sit there and waited for me to load up my goods just so they could be 20' closer, and I was probably 3 spaces from the handicapped parking. So when people act that way I just slow it down that much more and pushed the cart up to the door:p. Women? dont get me started on them. Its like a demolition derby with some of them, they have to take up the whole aisle, wont move over for nothing and will literally run over top of you if you're in thier way. This one is my pet peeve. I bet I haven't seen a truly handicapped person in the handicapped spaces in over a year. The have their little tags, pull in to a spot, and almost skip in to the store.
Impersonating a handicapped person. Is there a lower form of life than that?[/quote]
Lay off of my mother in law!:D naw.....I guess she needs that tag, shes 77 years old, and has a bad back. But I question it sometimes, when theres a "good" sale going on?;)

I'll draw some fire for this, but to me that handicapped sign hanging from the mirror usually only means 2 things. It serves as a warning to other drivers that the person can't drive for squat and is prone to make you angry enough that they need a giant tag hanging from the mirror to remind other drivers to take it easy on them.
Secondly, it usually just means the person is too fat to function normally. Rather than make them get some extra exercise by walking, we make it easier on them to maintain their lifestyle. It is RARE that I see someone parked in the handicapped space is actually "handicapped". When they are, they can't find a space because some fat slob has already taken the spot.

Most of the handicapped tag abusers I see are perfectly healthy but are using Grandpa's tag. Nevermind that grandpa is 10 miles away comfortably ensconced in his La-Z-Boy drinking a beer and watching the game, they're out using his parking permit.

They must be pretty easy to get. My mother had a knee operation last fall and they gave her one, she just threw it away.
If we could get those passes enforced better, along with people driving slow in the passing lane on 2 lane highways the we'd all be better off.

The first person that I personally hear badmouth my mother in a parking lot for her handicap tag parking will probably catch a beatdown. She's had 2 total knee replacements and has severe rheumatoid arthritis but would probably appear normal to most of you when you see her going from her parking spot into the store. If any of you could spend a day walking around in her condition from one end of the parking lot to the other, you would probably recant your opinion about a whole lot of people that look "normal" and are abusing the parking privileges.
Those spots are not reserved just for quadriplegics that are confined to a wheelchair.
It's already against the law to just hang out in the left lane although it's rarely enforced. That's why there are signs everywhere that say "keep right except to pass". There is even a predetermined number of points removed from your license for the ticket.
The United States Uniform Vehicle Code states:
Upon all roadways any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic ...

I have to agree and disagree with quackr on this. Yes, your mother deserves a handicapped plate and the right to park in the closest spot to the store. My disagreement is the fact that there is even allowances for a sticker on the mirror. A truly deserving person needs to get a license plate that is a permanent parking pass. The sticker on the mirror is probably one of the most abused privileges out there and should not be allowed. If they are allowed, they should have a time limit like a temporary license plate. My mother-in-law had to take her mother to the doctor every couple of weeks so she got a sticker. Her mother died 5 years ago but guess what? The sticker is still around and she uses it every chance she gets. I have tried to shame her into getting rid of it but she won't. She should be standing in front of a judge explaining why she, and others, abuse the stickers.
My wife and I have started our own little vendetta against WalMart. My wife has her own reasons but mine have to do with our local store having a dozen employees standing around the checkouts while one lane is open and backed up 20 people deep. I got applause from several folks in an express line one night a year or so ago. We were lined up at least 10 deep behind a moron with a cart running over in the 20 and less aisle. At least 6 employees were huddled up within spitting distance of the checkouts doing NOTHING. An assistant manager came over to us and said we should walk over to the customer service desk 50 feet away to check out. I asked him why they allowed someone with a full cart to hog the express line? I also asked the BOZO why he didn't open up some of the 20 lanes that were closed? He said he wasn't allowed to? I then told him that this is exactly why most folks hate this ----ing store. I then pushed my cart to the side and started for the door. Some of the folks behind me did the same as they applauded my outburst. It didn't change a thing but I felt better.

That's the whole point, the people who really need the spaces can't get them because they hand out those passes like candy. That's one of the reasons I like to park as far away as possible, to let those people who need the spots have them. I'm able to walk it and I don't mind it because it's better for me and my vehicle. You're exactly right about not being able to judge a persons handicap from just looking at them though. It's just one of those issues for me, sort of like how either 1 in 3 or 1 in 4 Kentuckians are listed as "disabled" and draw a check. I know that there's plenty of legit cases out there, but if even 1 and 10 people are disabled in this state, we have a SERIOUS problem. Obviously we do.
I DARE you to find me 1 person who's ever gotten a ticket for driving in the left lane.:D I know it's a law but I've NEVER heard of anyone being ticketed.

I can't remember ever seeing a handicapped sticker but my mom and dad (before he passed) both had the placcards that hung from the rearview mirror. All of those that I ever saw did have an expiration date as to when they were to be up for review for renewal.
Mom has the license plate now. I am not sure if those have any special requirements for renewal or not.

The placards that hang on the rear view mirror do have an expiration date. To get them, you must have a state form, signed by a Doctor. They cost $8.00 and are good for six years. No, I don't have one. My wife is an activities director at a nursing home.;)

I HATE THE GROCERY!!
I try to be polite saying excuse me when I try to pass by in front of someone looking at an item. I don't get that respect though!!!!
I bargain shop but that usually means park the cart in the meat isle at an end where there is no traffic and QUICKLY browse the coolers before I decide to buy there or go to Meijers for comparison (1's always cheaper than the other).
When its time to check out, I load the conveyor as to how I want it bagged so that nothing gets damaged. And so that when I get home, this bag goes down stairs, this to the bathroom and this here. I also help out and bag when there is no one doing it.
I hate when they manage to get that last bag (produce) in the middle of the cart under the canned items knowing that I put them up there in an order so that that wouldn't happen.
U Scan should have a price drop also since I'm working!!

keeping to the right lane do not help the drivers trying to enter the x-way, why don't someone check the figures that list the cause of wrecks, a number of entance ramps are not build so that merging traffic can get up to speed ,sometime all of the drivers are in the right-hand lane unless the lane are merging from the left side then all drivers are in that lane

Too bad there's no way to test for common sense when they issue a driver's license. I'm fairly certain that "except to pass" applies to merging traffic also. Most of the onramps were designed when 55 was the national speed limit. Others are leftover cloverleafs from when they were toll roads (talk about dangerous, now).
It's illegal in most states (maybe all) for a semi to fail to yield the right lane at entrance ramps for possible merging traffic. That may also apply to all vehicles, I'm not sure. A good friend of mine that got his CDL was discussing that with me while he was taking the class. It's pretty common for trucks around here that fail to do it.

it not the trucks that bother me as much as the cars that are tailgating other cars or trucks , there are 2 places where driving at a speed of 25mph onto the xway are too fast /75 mph are too slow, the worst bottle neck receive traffic from both East and West I-275 going to south bound I-75 plus Turfway and Donaldson Road

I am afraid that you are right for some drivers, all that I ask for is that other drivers stay out of my blind spot and that blind spot can extend backward for 50 to 100 feet depending on the on-ramp curve, the straight ramps is not that bad

I work every day. There is days that walking is no problem. there is days that walking 10 feet is like being put on a torture rack. And for the guy who complained about fat people I am one of them. And if you dont like my useing my tag when it hurts to walk all i have to say is . sucks to be u. I served my country and was hurt in the military. so on the bad days i will use my tag!!!!!!:p

I totally agree with the parking lot stuff. Drives me crazy. I usually grab a couple of nearby carts on my way in just so my car won't get hit, and I've had people think that I work there. I have people think that all the time anyway, just because I'm being courteous and wearing a tie because I just got off work. It's kind of funny, happens all the time, people always ask me where the craziest things are. They get the most confused look on their face when I chuckle and tell them I have no idea where it is.

Great post and I agree. Both of my grandpa's have a handicapped sticker and both would appear normal to the average person. But have a list of ailments as long as your arm. Just because someone isn't in a wheelchair doesn't mean they shouldn't use that spot. It's essentially an "elderly" parking pass anyway and I have no problem with that. Let gramps park up there. I don't mind the extra 30 yard walk.As a side note, I don't ever remember seeing all the handicapped parking spots filled.

I have no faith in humanity and therefore don't want anybody else's car anywhere close to mine. :D Seriously, I will literally park on the far corner, usually 4-5 spaces away from anybody, not that I have a nice car or anything. I'll still grab shopping carts on the way in. The front part of the parking lot has a much higher rate of people who just really don't care if their car door or their shopping cart smacks your car so I want nothing to do with it.
Besides, if you never park at the end, you can't drag race your shopping cart down the parking lot. :D

I'll do that too. There won't be a car anywhere near and I'll come out of the store only to find my truck surrounded with a large gap up to the next batch of cars.
I do try to park with a few "bumpers" between myself and the largest majority of free ranging carts. I figure those other cars may slow them down and keep them from reaching maximum velocity before they make it to mine. I don't know how many times I have seen people just stand there and watch as their cart takes off across the parking lot rattling off of everything in it's path. They don't even attempt to stop it.

I try to figure out which way the parking lot is slanted, then try to park uphill. Most are slanted ever so slightly and it would take one heck of a wind to push them up that incline.

Yeah, every Walmart I've ever been to sloped away from the store for obvious reasons. Parking way out in the lot gives you a good excuse to ride you cart down to your car, but also gives runaway, stray carts an incline to pick up speed and dent your ride.

Yeah but they tilt back up about 2/3 of the way down the lot, especially near the corners. :) At least the local one does.

Took the family to Disney a number of years ago, line for each ride about 18 miles long. There's a special "handicap friendly" access for those in wheelchairs, they proceed directly to the front of the line. Nearly every ride somebody in a wheelchair that was too short for their weight and 18 hooligans in tow would mosey up and commandeer the next car in the station. About halfway through the day I thought about faking a knee injury and getting a wheelchair. :D
