So if I want to sit on here and ham it up with some guys before I go to work, I don't really care to read how some a-hole thinks we're check grabbers because we have jobs that allow us to sit at a computer some times.

Pete, sounds like something is bothering you...lol, but let me say this in response. 1st I agree that there are people out there who could work and don't because the gov. makes it to easy for them not to. 2nd before you go jumping on people who frequent this site you should learn something about them. They might post on here during the day becuase they got up at 11:00 pm and was at work before you got up at 4:30 or maybe they go to work at 3:30 in the afternoon while you are home with your family. And lastly, they might have gotten some advice like I did when a wise and wealthy man told me to learn to work smarter and not harder....and started their own business so they could control their time. What ever the case might be you shouldn't automatically think just because someone is able to post here during the day they are a dead beat.

Pete,
Same here, at work. Being a fellow eastern Kentuckian I'm sure you are well aware of our welfare nation we have here. Can't stand seeing perfectly fit people spending my tax dollars and eating better than I am. I call 'em "Leeches". Half the people here are at some stage or another in feeding off uncle sams teet. Have you heard the new commercial from our local disability lawyer (won't name names, but you know him) "Do you want SSI?" Want? What happened to need? Now he has a doctor's office built in at his complex. If that ain't crooked, don't know what is. I can't stand to go to my high school basketball games anymore cause his smug little picture is plastered everywhere, even on the sign for the high school itself. Remeber his catchphrase " the name says it all" (his last name is Conn) HAHAHAHAHA wonder how long it took for them to realize how truthful that was.

Pete, you and I can't seem to agree on the elk situation, but at least we share a common view of this crook. He is a scourge on society. Only here in eastern Kentucky. We try so hard to shed our negative image of welfare families and ignorant hillbillies and we allow something like this attorney to plaster everything that is wrong with our community on every corner. What makes this even worse is these people get approved for thier "disability" and get thier perscription "medicine" hand in hand with thier check.

I love it when I get behind some big ol fat woman or man in the checkout line at the grocery store and watch them buy their potato chips, soft drinks, cookies, frozen pizzas, ice cream, Little Debbie cakes, Bubble gum, candy bars, frozen corn dogs, steaks, and other crap with their food stamp debit card. I am talking about folks that make me look skinny, and that aint easy to do!:D
I really question how many people actually go to bed hungry each night because they are poor and destitute. It seems the more poor people are the fatter their kids are. If somebody really needs help, I have no problem with that. But I hate watching folks buy junk food with their food stamp debit card and then buy their lottery tickets with cash.
One more thing. This reality is not limited to east KY. There are sorry people everywhere.

I recently got behind 2 welfare queens while at the grocery. They were both about 300 pounds, covered with tattoos and paying with WIC and food stamps. Both of them had much more expensive items in their cart than I would hardly ever buy. I was so temped to ask both of them if they got to pay for the tattoos with food stamps that were paid for WITH MY TAX MONEY!!!
I see one family locally that has 4 generations under the same roof with the 4th generation being born to a 13 and 15 year old. There has never been a days work done by anyone in the whole frickin family yet they all have cell phones, satellite TV and designer clothes. There seems to be ZERO sense of pride in this family that makes most of us get up and go to our jobs every day. They have learned to suck Uncle Sucker dry and are teaching the next generation the same thing every dozen years or so.
Most of us fear socialism is creeping into our country but I'll tell you that it is already here in the welfare state and in those who feel Uncle Sucker should provide them everything--cradle to grave. As bad as I hate the situation, I wonder if any of us or the politicians we elect has the nads to say ENOUGH.
BTW, I'm self-employed and don't keep a computer at the studio (for good reason).

Keep in mind welfare is not the same anymore. One can only use so many years of elgibility now. Foodstamps is another story and its income based, and yes there are people who take advantage of the system. I can guarantee just about everyone has someone in their family doing it...manipulating the system one way or another. Actual "welfare" or "TANF" funding is really not that high compared to other programs. What about illegals coming to the country, having kids..and bam their dependents automatically qualify for medicaid??? Medicaid and medicare costs are the real issue...We spend more money on healthcare in this country and the quality of care is NO better compared to countries who spend significantly less. Not hijacking the thread..just throwing out some other variables. Hope this doesnt get me banned. I do agree...lethargy, freeloaders, etc..is a poor excuse. In other countries one starves...here, they get diabetes.

I heard about this on Paul Harvey today. Some of the insurance companys, are wanting to fly heart bypass, patients out of the country for their operation. They say it is cheaper, to do this and put the whole family up in a hotel, than have the operation in the US. Bypass in the US, 130 thousand dollars? one of several other countrys mentioned, under 30 thousand.

You was talking about heart bypass surgery,i'd say you would have to be put on a waiting list long enough to kill you for the $30,000 operation and still be sub-par to the US.

Thats WIC. Saw at Walmart that they changed the rules so WIC reciepiants can only buy the generic milk. I have always thought that the food stamp system would be better served if the types of food were restricted (i.e. junk food, candy, ect.) Since the paper stamps are no longer used, one would think that since the new system is electronic the above could be implemented pretty easily. BTW even though there are no more actual stamps, people still "sell" food stamps for cash around here and I'm sure elsewhere. Now that makes me mad.

I think since it is my hard earned money they are spending that I should be able to "discriminate" as to what they can buy with it. All you hear in the news is we have the fattest kids with the worst teeth. Do something about it. Stick to the food pyramid that they push so hard. With the WIC program you can only buy X amount of milk, X amount of eggs ect for the health of the pregnant moms and children, no junk food.

I was working in finance in Georgia several years ago. We had a program that people on ssi could have thier checks sent direct deposit to the companys account so that when the 1st rolled around we would simply give them the change from their checks minus our payment. My district supervisor was working in my office one day on the 3rd and got into a heated arguement with a "person on the draw" that demanded we just give her the check without waiting in line, my supervisor said to her " if you would stop sucking on uncle sam's t*t and get a job, you wouldn't be in this line." Funny but he did get fired over it.

I also take WIC, at the farmers market, they cracked down on that a couple of years ago. Seems, some of the needy, were waiting till the fall decorating season, to buy, gourds, pumpkins and fodder shocks;)LOL. They can still buy pumpkins.........but no products, that are not edible. Wonder how many of those pumpkins are consumed?

Thankfully America is still a fairly free society, meaning we can still drink, smoke, chew, eat red meat, drink gallons of sweet tea and so forth, when you compare some of these things to those who preach a universal care solution or have one,its worth thinking alot about

I agree thankfully people have a choice, but sometimes poor choices such as drinking, smoking, chewing, poor diet etc....are the exact choices that lead to high health care costs. Im hipocritical because I do chew and drink....but lets face it...Americans are overweight, type II diabetes is an EPIDEMIC, we dont exercise, eat poorly, and do nothing UNTIL one is looking at a bypass. Insurance companies are only going to get more stingy with payments with people who do nothing to help their own cause, if they even offer any insurance at all. Massive changes are needed, and its going to get bad...

You make alot of sense but i'm not sure its the government's (enter TAXPAYER) problem.
Health insurance in this country is high for a reason, because #1.You get the best care possible #2. Alot of people abuse it #3. Alot of doctors abuse it
The great mystery is where universal healthcare is funded and that ties back in to this thread.

Do people get the best healthcare, for the money thats spent??....thats a volatile debate. I agree with it not being the governments problem. Just like the majority of people dont want their tax money going towards the freeloading welfare recipent who doesnt work....I dont want my Tax money going towards Jimbo's bypass because he/she spent the last 30yrs smoking, drinking, eating big macs, not exercising, sitting on the couch pounding ruffles, and washing it down with a 6 pack of mountain dew, etc...
Can one withold healcare...NO, thats not right, but they should have to pay higher premiums for their lifestyle. Wow..Ive gotten way off here! Back to the point..its not welfare thats the big concern, its healthcare. Social programs receive next to nothing compared to other areas of funding. Paying for someones food is negligible when considering indirectly paying for someones healthcare.

To your first question i have to answer yes, this country has the greatest economy in the world, due to Capitalism.
Your second question, well i grew up on pinto beans, cayenne pepper, cabbage, greens, maters,FRIED taters, cornbread, and onions of course.Water was the drink of choice or one could go thirsty. Why do we throw gas on the health care fire with such liberal policies?

My SIL is a doctor. I read in one of his medical journals that Thailand is a popular destination for bypass surgeries and the insurance companies do send the entire families there. Some might not but the two families featured in the article went and the insurance company paid for the flight, hotel and meals. The insurance company said the entire cost was about a third of what the surgery would have cost in the US. They sent the families as an incentive for the patient to agree to have the surgery overseas. The surgeons were trained in the US.

Time for me to gripe a little, I have read this thread and all I have seen is how people sit on their a$$ all day and draw a check. What about the one's that worked all their lives, payed in their taxes, then ended up getting hurt on their job's, are some of you saying that they should not draw a check if they are disabled, if so let me tell you all a story. I started working at 16 years old, now i'm 45. I payed my dues on every job I have ever had. In 1997 I fell off of a two story roof crushing everything in my right side and leg. It took me almost a year to learn to walk again after being on my back for 6 months. It is ture that I sit on my a$$ alot, but not because I want to, it's because I have to. If I walk around alot my leg will go out and my wife will find me laying on the floor, it has happened more then once and when it does I am on my back for another week or so. I think that we all need to watch what we say sometimes. You never know about someone till you have walked in their shoe's a little.

I agree completely. There are tons of illegal aliens entering this country that find jobs every day building, doing farmwork, etc. and then they say that a healthy, english speaking, person can not find a job. It is nuts. I work part time in a grocery store and i see people every day that "can't afford food" but can buy cartons of cigarettes and lottery tickets. Many people do need help from the gov. but even then it should not be abused. Many people need it and try to help themselves but so many do not that it is causing problems. The funding available for these programs is not enough to support so many people. Some people are lazy and gettin' fat off of free food. Well lets just give all these people free housing, alcohol, junk food, healthcare, and an income for the rest of their lives. Such a waste:mad:

I believe people on the draw have a complete, different set of values, than workin people?
When I was 12 or 13 years old, a new family moved in right down the road from us. they had 3 kids, and the oldest son, Ronald was my age, and we became friends, untill they moved away, a year later.
Once Ronald invited me to supper, with his family. When I went to the table, I thought DAMN, what a supper.......a heaping platter of boneless chicken breast,(I had never had boneless chicken at that time) tenderloin, and a big meatloaf......with all the sides, one could ask for, three meats, at one meal just amazed me!
But over that year, I began to notice a pattern, eating like royalty, for a few weeks of the month, then like hobos for the rest of the month. Pinto beans, and corn bread, or fried potatoes and corn bread, for maybe two weeks........ Breakfast would go from, sausage gravy, bacon, eggs and biscuits to, ........water gravy and water biscuits.
The next time I was invited to supper, Ronald and I were playing outside while the meal was being prepared inside, and Ron said we would have a good meal today, got a raise on their foodstamps,I had never known anyone on foodstamps.....although,I had heard of them, and how sorry the people were, that used them........I kind of felt sick to my stomach, at that point, finding out they were on foodstamps.
When his mom called to come and eat, we sat at the table, and I remember trying to get that chicken, to go down, I just could not swallow it knowing it was bought with the stamps...LOL His mom asked what was wrong....I told her I was not feeling well, and needed to go home.
I never ate there again, but Ron and I remained friends, till he moved away.

There aint nothin wrong with water gravy, ate it alot.I never remember being hungry, didn't have time to be.
I do remember eating like kings in the winter time though about the time tobacco sold,of course that offset the 3months of nights after school stripping it without much of anything.

Everyone seems to be overlooking the reasons why we live a "check grabber" society. Simply put, it is due in part to the way they were raised. Is it true in every instance? No. Do many use poverty in their youth as a motivating factor to achieve a better life? Yes. However, far too many young adults view a monthly check and .gov benefits as a way of life. They come from generation after generation of governmental dependancy. They see nothing wrong with. In fact, they view it as being normal.
On a side note, many young adults today view a entry-level, low income, job as almost a insult. Many will not apply for them because they feel as though "they ain't working for $5.85 a hour". They do not see such jobs as a beginning to other job opportunities. They fail to realize that higher paying jobs often require job experience.

When i was thirteen yrs. old i had a shovel in my hand "in the real world",much longer in the mommy daddy land.
I have a 17-18yr. old nephew that i could put to work in the summer but instead he would rather work at Dairy queen and B**ch about how he couldn't afford to work or earn enough to work. That's why raising min. wage is bad, everything follows it.

The point to this arguement is that there are those people who are satisfied with $6.00 a hour as a way of life and then there are those who view it as a starting point. It would be nice if we all could start out at the top, but unfortunately that isn't the way it works in the real world. My first job out of college was little more than $5.85 a hour. However, I stayed with that job for almost two years. Why? Because I wanted the experiece. The point, I am where I am in life now because of that low paying job. It was my starting point, not the finish line.

My first job paid about $3.25 and hour I think:confused: Been a long time ago:p Course I was raised on a farm. That jobs payment was I DIDNT get an a$$ kicking if I got my work done:D I keep a hourly log for my state farmers project application in the FFA. I logged 14-18 hours(suckering in the morning when dew was on, cut during the day, bring in, in the evenings and strip all night) a day on the weekends in the tobbaco. I logged 6-8 hours a day after school often. There was only me and my dad raising three-four acres or so. When new US23 came thru it took most of our bottom land which meant we had to sell the stock and stop farming tobbaco:mad: I wont form an opinion of someone recieving govt aid unless I know the whole story. I know to many good people who worked their whole lives then got busted up and fired because they couldent work anymore. Most people dont realize theirs a BIG DIFFERENCE between S.S.I, welfare(etc) and Social Security Disability. They tend to lump all of them together but thats just not the case. You have to had worked "X " ammount of time and paid in "x" ammount of credits to even qualify for disability. Not to mention trying to get it. My best buddies brother died from cancer. He got his disability TWO FRIGGEN WEEKS BEFOR HE DIED!! He had been trying for three years while he was practically bed ridden...

Your right, ain't nothin wrong with it. But in this case, the family could have eat like kings all month, with a little management, of the stamps! They went ........WAY overboard, the first half of the month, then almost "suffered" the last half.

You know what really makes me mad?
Check grabbers!!!
I am so sick and tired of seeing the sorry, lazy, good for nothing people not working, just waiting for the government to hand them a check every month, which also makes me mad as hell!!!!!!!
There is NO REASON, NO REASON at all that a man cannot find a job, it might not be the job he wants, but it IS a job!!!!!
To all you guys that have time to sit and be on this website ALL DAY because you don't have to get up at 4:30am and go to work, GO GET A DANG JOB, quit relying on the rest of us to keep you up!!!!!!
Well I must go back to loading a truck, AT WORK!!!!!!!
Now, I feel somewhat better!!!!!:)
I've never claimed to be the smartest man before but I don't even think I would make such a dumb comment about people I know NOTHING about. I have noticed that alot of people post in the day while "at work" just LIKE me. Have you ever thought they have a computer in front of them and have some spare time or that they are allowed to use them to see whats going on. I for one work TWO jobs to make sure I can make ends meet. And have done so for about 7 yrs. My second job pays me enough that it covers my gas and car ins all month and have a little extra. Maybe you should get another job so you don't have time to post STUPID comments about people you don't know.

They need to drug test everyone once a month, that gets a welfare check. That would cut a lot of people out and send them to work here in Eastern Ky.

I'm not sure who it was but someone proposed that in congress or the senate I think. One of the big ACLU or the other crazy place threatned to bring lawsuits against them. Then it was dropped. I guess they didn't want to "Offend" anyone getting a check by making them take a drug test. I know someone on here that kepts up with the crazy things the govt try's to do will tell us who it was excatly cause I can't remember. But I agree with it.

The problem Kodiak is you don't live here. I'm sure if you were born and raised here you would understand that Pete's comments weren't off base. I personally know, 1st name basis, at least 40 to 50 people just on the road I live on that are perfectly healthy men and women that are nothing more than leeches on society, only purpose in thier life is for others to support them. Hell I even have people like this in my family (not proud of that BTW). Thing that pisses me off is that these people are almost proud that they don't have to work, they brag about being on the draw. My wife's uncle draws a tremendous disability check (and a methadone perscription) every month because "He hurt his back in the mines" Not only have I saw with my own eyes this man lifting things that I would struggle with but out of his own mouth he told me to come up to his house and purposely "hurt" myself so that I could make a claim against his home owners insurance and claim disability!! "Drawing checks" just scratches the surface of the problems here, ever try to get auto insurance in eastern ky? Mine doubled moving back home from Georgia with the same carrier. Wouldn't be that way if people weren't constantly scamming the system. Not to mention burning the doublewide down cause you can't make the payments, the perscription drug problem, hell even poaching ties in with this mentality. I could have stayed in Georgia making more money better education for my kids, ect. . . but I moved back home because I love these mountains and most of the people here and the situation here will never change unless people like myself strive to work hard and provide something back to the community instead of sucking the life out it by being a pariah on society. Before you (kodiak) start spouting off about others being stupid, look in the mirror first.

I wasn't the one that "Spouted" off, his comment never said people from eastern Ky. I know lots of people from out there and have no problem with any of them. I use to deliver parts out there twice aweek and I know what your talking about. Just to let you know, those problems happen here as well as out there. I just stated that maybe when you make a thread that says basicly everyone that posts in the morning and afternoon need to get a job, then maybe you should get to know them before you start talking about them. I never ment to piss anyone off if I did then sorry. I actually look forward to checking out this site everyday just to see whats going on when I'm caught up with work for a couple minutes.

Kodiak,
I was trying to make a point that "check grabbers" had nothing better to do than surf the web all day long, maybe this website, maybe a basketball website, maybe a forum for check grabbers only, I really don't care which one. The point I was trying to make is that "check grabbers" had plenty of time to do it. What they need to do with there time is get a job. PERIOD!!!!!!!!
And I am sorry to tell you,,, I do know about the people I am speaking about!!!!! Lots of Neighbors and relatives of mine just sit and wait on that monthly check from the government!!
Sorry again if I made a post in which you could not comprehend the sarcasm such as my first post.;)

I don't think that many people drawing a govt check set on the net all day long, at least not around here. There usually all hanging out at someone's house drinkin beer and passin some bud..
At least thats the case I've seen around here, they all have medical cards that pay for everything and all of them have chronic back pain and a perscription for perkisette.
Several couples I know have a deal that works like this, they have their "partner" not married, go and sign them and their kids up on govt and get food stamps and all the stuff that goes with it, then the man of the relationship actually does hold down a job, maybe not one that recieves a normal paycheck but at least brings home a few hundred a week. They take that money that he earns and parties all weekend and they live off of the govt for what they reallly need.
