I just bought 20 apple trees and 10 pear trees and have no experience with fruit trees. They are all 4-6 feet in height. I bought them Sunday. I won't be able to get to the farm to plant them for a week or two. How long will they survive in the pots?
I would love advice on how to arrange the trees, distance apart, recommended fertilizers, and some ideas on cheap ways to protect the trees. I also know nothing about pruning or maintenance of the trees.
I really hadn't planned on doing this, but thought I'd give it a shot. Any help would be appreciated.
I read Al's post and sent him a pm, but would welcome any ideas or advice.

Just keep them well watered and you should be okay. I planted 20 fruit trees three years ago. Half were in pots from Lowes and the other half I bought at a flea market and they were just in a plastic bag. The ones at Lowes were $18-20 each and the ones at the flea market were 10 for $100.
All the ones from the Flea Market have made it so far. I have had to replace four of mine from Lowes, but they were under the one year warranty.
I planted mine 8-10 feet apart and staggerd them a bit so they are not in a straight line. I also used a Bag of Mulch for each one to keep in the moisture.
Good luck, mine are growing slowly and still lack fruit, but I figure it may take three more years. I went with pear, apple and cherry trees.
As for protecting them, I used about a two foot section of black drainage pipe, cut on one side. Slide it over the base of the tree and you should be good to go. Two years ago I had bugs real bad and used seven powder to get rid of the bugs.

With that many trees, I would buy a good book on the subject, or maybe two.............. books and hands on experience, can't beat it!;)

One thing I think You should do is make wire fence cicles to put around them as the deer WILL eat them & rub on them. That's my adive as I do that with mine. I have had deer eat them in the winter. I use box wire fence.
