Dug it on and off most of my life. Prices went through the roof last year and had a buyer tell me today to expect the same this coming season. Not as much around these days but there is still alot to be found if your willing put the time in looking.

It's alot of fun and a good way to make some spare change in your spare time. What was the going price last year, I didn't have a chance to dig any?

You had better learn the rules and regulations before you start digging. You can get in big trouble if you don't. With that said...its fun to dig if you can find it. I doubt you get rich but it's something to do. It can get to be work when it's hot and the horseflies start to bite but like i said..it beats setting in the house.

Aug. 15 for digging, Sept. 1 for selling/buying.
I usually dig it if I find it while im squirrel hunting. My dad sold some last year for 800 dollars a pound.

 I've sold pounds of it lower than $300lb.
Those woods are long gone now though, subdivisions got most of them.

Where do you do it at? Do you have to go to the mountains or somthing? And how long does it take to get a pound?

It takes awhile to get a pound! Unless you find a good place. Grows best in deep hollars if you can find some where it has not been hunted in awhile!

It's ginseng, not gensing. In case anyone plans to google it.

I have some guys who sneak in on my property and dig the stuff beginning in late spring. I believe if I catch them this year, I will turn them in. THey are out of towners who rent a house next to my farm for the sole purpose of digging ginseng. They made a comment last year, that they dug enough seng in two weeks to pay their rent for a year. This pisses me off.

In Kentucky, the theft of $100 or more in ginseng roots is a felony !!
Heres a link with some good info....Its for growers and it a little old but still a good read. http://www.a-spi.org/AGF/manual1.htm

• Kentucky requires that seeds adhering to harvested wild ginseng be planted within 50 feet of the location of the plant, “with no tool used other than the finger.”

Maybe a lifetime, maybe a GOOD afternoon.
A heaping shoe box full of fresh dug root will dry down to a pound range.
trust me

That depends on the size of the shoe...:D
A bread bag stuffed full of dried root to where it won't tie at the top is about a pound. That's a lot of digging. The size restrictions that came down should help eliminate the digging of small stuff. I think, but am not sure, that the root has to have 5 bud scars on it now before you can dig it. It was 10 at first but they revised it back down.

Thats right. It has to be 5 years old to sell it. Several people got stuck with alot of roots that were too young when that went into effect.
