With the potential forthcoming of a new 7 week old registered GSP, chocolate female I might add, I am already thinking next steps. While I have broke/trained a few setters over the years, I really do not know how much time or access to resources such as birds, etc that I will have to develop this dog to it's full potential. With more reponsibility at work, the kids crazy schedules, etc., finding the time might be difficult. I do not want to short change the dog though. Of course, this is all assuming that this little flea bag is not a mutt, is crazy over birds, etc. Assuming we get that far, I know it takes a great deal of time, effort as well as resources (birds, etc) for a dog to reach it's potential. Just curious, how many of you have solicited help in the training of your gun dog? That is something that I have never done but I am considering it with this potential new addition. Any thoughts, considerations or opinions (or even references) in this area are most appreciated.

Also, here's a pic of the potential new addition.

I wouldn't miss the pup's early days for anything. When I was starting a family and raising kids, I got out of the dog business entirely, but as soon as the younguns were big enough to keep their heads out of the toilet, I got right back in.

There are good trainers out there but I think you lose something in the relationship by letting someone else do the training. There is something you both learn about each other during that special process.

Be happy to give you a hand in getting started or whatever, my door is open, have some different varieties of dogs here now young an old. Have a younger pup in that age bracket we can play with. Come on down if ya want, Have pigeons, and quail, we can work on bird exposure an retrieving, for starters, Thanks, Jonesy

What resources do you have? If you have access to good flying birds (either wild, johnny house, or homing pigeons), I think that you can get your dog VERY FAR in the training process in as little as 15-30 minutes every other day or so. Of course, it'll take wild birds eventually to make your dog a wild bird dog, but you can put the foundation in with just a little effort every other day.

I do train part time, and I get a lot of dogs only because the owner doesn't have the time. It can be a good value for the guy whose only access is $7 per quail on Saturdays at a game preserve 60-90 minutes away. I'm not looking for new dogs, because I'm full for the rest of the year, but if you decide that you want to put your dog with someone, call Dave Jones in Berea.

Thanks but I was pretty busy with Cloe yesterday. Just getting her used to everyone including my 7yr old setter the back yard, etc. Things are going pretty well and she really likes being held by the family. She spent most of the day when not playing in someone's lap inside the house asleep or sleeping on her blanket on the couch, lol. Spoiled already. She is not very happy in her crate or in the kennel outside but that will come in time. Anyway, she is getting plenty of attention right now, lol.

So the journey begins! Wish me luck!

I feel your pain but I wouldn't change it for anything. Those first few nights were pretty sleepless though. I wish you luck. Mine has settled in and knows the routine now.
