Last year I planted a small patch of rye on my dad's place in mid september and it did really well. I was wanting to try something different this year and was wondering if the ground is still too dry to bother trying right now. So I guess my questions are:
What is a good deer only food plot for just a very small area (30'x75' strip), and when is the optimal time to plant (from now forward).
Also...are there any no till mixes that fare well or produce much (tractors on the frits).

You could try wheat. It's cheap and as easy to grow as anything. Turkeys will eat it though. It will need to be in contact with the dirt. Double the seed rate, drag with an ATV or wait for a rain.

Rye is good but I think wheat is better. You don't have the beards on winter wheat as you do with rye. Seems like animals will use it a little longer.
Something that I never see posted and that I use when wheat does not do well. Disk it up in the spring and sow something that everything including yourself will eat. Oats! They mature through the summer and you can still get in a winter wheat crop or rye.
