Last yr I planted 2 dozen fruit trees that I ordered from starke bros.
They were small branched sticks, so I wraped them with 4' welded wire cut to 6' lengths. I used tobacco sticks as stakes.
In one yr, and through the drought they out grew those little cages and deer ate 90% of the tips sticking out.
I pruned the trees and replaced the wire with 16.5' of wire, with T posts as stakes. That gives me 5' dia around the tree. Room to spread the branches for max fruit and fert and keep it weed free. And no more browse damage.
I should be able to remove the fence in 3 yrs., then Ill only protect the trunk from rubs.
