My son Tim (2/6 Fox Company) has been assigned to the 26 MEU. I have not heard much from him the last few weeks and I guess this is why. He called Friday and said not to expect to hear from him much if any for the next several months. If any of you Marines have ever been on assigned to a MEU any info would be greatly appreciated by his proud pop :)... Here are a few press releases...

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (Feb. 14, 2008)
The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit officially activated Feb. 14, assuming operational control of its ground combat, aviation combat and combat logistics elements. Now the Corps’ quickest, fiercest, and most agile form of Marine Air-Ground Task Force will prepare to deploy from the shores of North Carolina.

The addition of Battalion Landing Team 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines; Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron - 264 (Reinforced); and Combat Logistics Battalion - 26 brings the MEU to full strength with more than 2,200 Marines and Sailors.

The MEU now begins its grueling Pre-deployment Training Program (PTP) which will test the abilities and teamwork of MEU Marines capable of rapid response, amphibious operations, mechanized and helicopter raids, noncombatant evacuations, humanitarian assistance, urban warfare, peace enforcement and more.

The 26th MEU will initiate its pre-deployment training program with an operational evaluation of USS San Antonio (LPD-17), a brand-new vessel with state of the art facilities for supporting amphibious operations. The San Antonio was designed with an improved tactical lift capability which will enhance the MEU's ability to quickly and efficiently project power ashore. The new ship also boasts enhanced survivability features and improved command and control capabilities.

Following the OpEval, the 26th MEU will conduct training that integrates the diverse elements of the MAGTF. As one of the quickest, most versatile, and most lethal assets in the Corps’ arsenal, the MEU will focus its pre-deployment training on enhancing critical war-fighting capabilities and maximizing flexibility to support contingency operations anywhere on the globe. Marines will interweave helicopter, amphibious, ground-combat, and a wide range of other training missions in order to live up to the 26th MEU's motto, A Certain Force in an Uncertain World.

Major exercises the MEU has scheduled for the PTP include: Expeditionary Strike Group Integration (ESGINT) Exercise; Realistic Urban Training (RUT); Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX); and a Certification Exercise (CERTEX). Each exercise of the PTP serves as a building block for subsequent exercises, enhancing the capabilities that make the MEU a highly adaptive, rapid reaction force. After the PTP, the 26th MEU is scheduled to deploy with the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group early this fall. More information regarding the 26th MEU is available at http://www.usmc.mil/26thmeu.

26th MEU Embarks On New Amphibious Warship USS San Antonio
The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit is currently conducting the first major exercise of its six-month pre-deployment training period from March 3-17. The Marines are taking this opportunity to train their core competency of expeditionary operations during the Navy's operational evaluation of the new amphibious ship, LPD-17 USS San Antonio.

As the fundamental example of the Marine Air Ground Task Force concept, the 26th MEU will take this opportunity to work with the Navy to conduct a wide range of expeditionary operations, including noncombatant evacuations, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, mechanized and helicopter raids, and amphibious operations.

Media are invited to witness embarkation and amphibious operations from Onslow beach aboard Camp Lejeune anytime from March 3-17.

As one of the quickest, most versatile, and most lethal assets in the Corps' arsenal, the 26th MEU will focus its pre-deployment training on enhancing critical war-fighting capabilities that make it a highly adaptive, rapid reaction force.

So, no Marine on this site has been a part of a MEU?

Pooge,
I was part of a MEF (Marine Expidionary Force). It is much larger than the MEU's. Everyone I knew that went on a MEU went on ship for awhile. But I don't really know what they do to be honest.
