How is the deer hunting in Red River Gorge? This coming fall will be my first time ever deer hunting, and being that I won't have a rifle yet, I'll be limited to a 12-gauge with slugs. I've talked to a lot of experienced deer hunters, and they recommend quiet stalking and waiting in the brush for shotgun hunting. I realize a lot of people hunt deer in blinds or tree stands and wait, but I'd prefer to stay moving and only pause on occasions. I'm wondering if that would be a feasible tactic in Daniel Boone Forest.

Don't worry. I won't be the drunk jerk that goes snitching around at night and walks off a hundred foot cliff. With as dense as the Gorge is, I would think it would be a great place for deer, and would be a good place to try out some slugs.

Hunting as you propose, if you see anything, it will be the south end of a north-bound deer. And as rugged as it is, you will have one heck of a time getting a deer out of there. "Park low, hunt high."

All of the Daniel Boone is ruff hunting. Its the same if you go to cave run and hunt. If you want to see quality deer, you gotta do some walking and climb some hills.

Sneaking around in the brush will get you shot, not the deer. Too many hunters to be walking around. Get a vantage point up near a ridge, put your back against a tree, and wait. Deer get pushed around a lot and if you see one it will be running. If it pauses, that's your opportunity.

Deer are not real thick but the rhododendron is.

I hunted a public quota hunt a handful of years ago and after climbing up a tree and waited for daybreak had this guy walk under my stand wearing a royal blue jumpsuit and his hunter orange carrying his rifle. He said that this is how he hunts back home. Just kicks em up and shoots.

He left and went towards my buddy's direction. I warned my friend to watch out for the Smurf... he's armed and more than a little dangerous!
