Ok, I found this creek last year that I fished and it was chock full of smallies, rock bass, and just about anything else that likes a cool, clear gravel bottomed stream (except trout). Fished it last spring and between me and my buddy, we easily caught over 50 that went 11 inches or longer in one outing, not to mention all the other types of fish.

Now, moving forward, during the summer, someone asked on here about where the fish went when the creeks dried up. I had always believed that they just found deep pools and stayed there. Because of that thread, I got to thinking and went to the creek to check things out. Well even though there were barely a trickle of a flow, I found some deep pools and still caught a couple of nice one in what little time I spent there. That was right before it started to get rainy and fill the creeks back up. I thought everything would be good come this spring.

Moving forward again, with warm weather Sunday, I head out to the creek. As I get close to it, I get excited when I see that the water is crystal clear and at a good wadeable level. I'm having all these thoughts of how this is going to be a great day. Then I start fishing.

Nothing. Not a bite, not a nibble, not even the sight of one. Last spring we were sight fishing for them. I tried all the holes I knew had held fish last time. This time, nothing--not even a panfish. The only signs of life I saw were some minnows that might go 2 inches.

So, what happened to all the fish and when will they come back? Given the size of what I was catching last year, I can't imagine they do this every year. Some of those fish had to be several years old and there were fish of all sizes that led me to believe they were born and raised there.

I feel your pain. Same thing happened to me, only the fish disappeared in November. Water was crystal clear but could not see anything or catch anything. Normally the water was swarming with smallies, green sunfish, longears, gills, and chubs. It's like they all went somewhere else. Even the deep pools seemed to be lacking anything but very small minnows. I'm hoping they come back later in the spring.

i wouldnt worry too much. A creek i fish (peters) is almost exactly like you described. shallow, cold, gravel bottom, and even trout in this one. went during the winter and no fish at all, none. water is crystal clear and you cant even see the fish. I have no explanation for what happens, except that they might find the deepest holes to spend the winter, but when it warms up the fish are back and just as easy to catch...

Hope your fish made it but you know some places had a die off from lack of oxygen and creek fish being used to a steady flow suffer the worst---even in the lake like Barren some of the hybrid died out

Last years weather could have somethin to do with it.

Fish do this every year. When cold weather comes they move to deep pools so they don't have to worry about getting froze in or drying up. Then warmer weather comes about and thoughts of love start moving the fish. Lots of fish go spawn where they were hatched. I don't really know about Kentucky's creek fish but I would imagine this is what happens. I know last year I tried to fish the creeks very early and had a terrible time catching anything but suckers (cast net). Find the deepest longest holes you can find and try there.

Think about it for a second...those shallow clear streams don't have any food in them yet. The fish and even most minnows head down to big water when it gets cold. The insects aren't really out yet, the crawdads are hibernating. When it warms up and the bottom of the food chain gets active, the fish will make their spawning runs and fill the creeks again.

They've just moved to deeper holes to winter.Catfish-Insider did an article a few years back on a telemetry study in small rivers with tagged flatheads. They all moved from their seasonal haunts to deep holes to winter.Once Spring set in they moved back to their normal spots.Your fish will be back after the first couple of warm, spring rains gets the temps up.

Yep, they have moved to deeper water like it has been said before. But watch the weather and get out there after we have some warm days, the bite will be ON!
