Just got back in from putting my 4 month old setter pup on her first pigeon. I'm pleased to report that she is nuts about them. Let the journey begin!

That is a sign of good things to come. I wish you a summer full of fun!

Well that sure is a nice thing to know. After all, that is part of the battle that is hard for the owner to win for the dog. The dog must love birds.

Yeah its a long tough road if they don't love birds. One I'm not willing to sink the time and money into. If she didn't like them she would have been a house pet or gone.

When properly done all dogs "should" love birds. Sounds like your starting out right.

They should, but some don't. I've seen a couple setters that just didn't have "it". They lacked the drive to get out and hunt for them. Some folks make excuses about illness or whatever, but regardless of the reason, there are some that just won't get out there and hunt them up.

I'm not doubting that at all, but I hear way too many excuses about training. Some people just don't take the time or have the patience to do it right. Not saying it couldn't happen, but I doubt I'll ever have the problem with a dog that won't hunt. I bond with the dog, keep things fun and always keep the dog in wild birds. This works for me.

Makes summer not so bad with a young dog to work with. Hope everything goes well.

Took her out again today. Locked two pigeon's wings together and laid them in the high grass. She smelled the first, flash pointed and began to creep in on it. I stepped on the check cord and walked around to undo the pigeon. She tore off after it. Second one she pointed and was solid on. I walked up to her and stroked her back and tail. She never moved. I tied the check cork just in case and walked in to undo the pigeon. She never moved. Let it go and she broke. Day 2 looks really good.

I got a 5 month old dog in yesterday for a month of bird intro, handling, and gun intro (if possible). I released one as we were walking back from the pigeon coop and she VERY enthusiastically chased it. I liked that.
We gave her 6 opportunities to point. My program tries to simulate what a wild bird would do, and I do this with elec launchers and pigeons. If they get too close, I flush the bird. And I do this without saying anything......let this be between her and the bird.
She flash pointed on Bird #4, held #5 for 5 seconds, and held #6 for 10 seconds. And she was chasing so enthusiastically, I fired a blank when she was in full chase and over 50 yards from me and she never showed any indication of ever hearing it. Looks like a got a real prospect here.

Payton, sounds great. I have three launchers as well they do come in handy.

Tail's not good but that will come with time and greater intensity. She's still letting me walk in front of her to undo the pigeon. She's 4 months old now.

Goof looking dog. I got dogs doin' the pigeon thing right now too. Every weekend those little feed bills get to go bust up some pigeons.

i have been training pointers for over 25 years, and just got two german wirehaired pointers, from germany, talk about self trained pups, the breading really stands out,the pups are only four months old and are working as well as my older dogs.they hold point, they back each other, they will not chase a bird ,they are steady to wing and shot, they both go and bring the dead bird back to me ,they are both whow broke but one is a little better than the other,my hunting buddies just cant get over these pups.if you hunters out there get the chance get a whirehaired pup they are awsome!!!!!!!!! thanks happing hunting

A wirehaired pup out of Germany is a Drahthaar, backed up by many generations of testing and selective breeding. The shorthair version is the Kurzhaar. Both breeds have clubs in the US and there are breeders/owners here doing the same testing and training. Worth checking out.
